Parution du nouveau livre blanc d’OpenStudio avec le concours d’OW2, à l’occasion du salon Open Source Experience des 6 & 7 décembre 2023 au Palais des congrès de Paris

Paris, France, le 16 novembre 2023 – OpenStudio, entreprise de services numériques spécialisée dans l’open source et OW2, la communauté de promotion des logiciels open source pour les professionnels annoncent la parution du livre blanc OpenSource et Logiciels Libres : perspectives et visions des acteurs de l’OpenSource le 6 décembre 2023 lors d’Open Source Experience.

Paradoxalement, l’open source est un modèle à la fois très implanté dans l’écosystème numérique et en même temps très mal connu ou qui apparaît compliqué aux yeux du grand public. Pourtant il est important de comprendre en quoi il consiste et les réalités qu’il recouvre, pour appréhender sa place actuelle et son intérêt pour l’avenir du numérique.

En effet, il nous semble que ce modèle incontournable va notamment être au cœur de deux grands enjeux des prochaines années : la sobriété du numérique et le développement de l’intelligence artificielle. En Europe, les chantiers sont nombreux car ces deux transformations impliquent de travailler sur un numérique plus respectueux de l’environnement mais aussi plus indépendant des géants aux États-Unis et en Chine, et tout cela sans freiner l’innovation.

OpenStudio, entreprise de services numériques investie dans l’open source et membre d’OW2 depuis 2023, a souhaité contribuer à sa manière, en publiant un livre blanc dont la vocation est de croiser les regards entre différents acteurs de l’open source, intitulé OpenSource et Logiciels Libres : perspectives et visions des acteurs de l’OpenSource.

Les arguments et les nombreux témoignages de ce livre blanc - complémentaire aux autres ouvrages de qualité sur le sujet - visent à éclairer les raisons d’un potentiel développement important de l’open source dans les prochaines décennies tout en soulignant les freins qui restent à lever pour que ce modèle soit davantage plébiscité par les acteurs économiques, privés, publics ou associatifs.

Le livre blanc en version PDF, librement et gratuitement téléchargeable et sous licence libre Creative Commons, paraîtra officiellement le 6 décembre 2023 à l’occasion du salon Open Source Experience des 6 & 7 décembre au Palais des congrès de Paris. Il sera également possible de pré-commander des exemplaires imprimés gratuits, en remplissant les flyers présents sur le stand OW2 (H24).

New release Open Source Good Governance handbook

At EclipseCon in Ludwigsburg, members of the OSPO Alliance announce release of GGI V1.2, getting a step further in the support provided for the governance of FOSS within organizations. 

Ludwigsburg, October 18, 2023 – The members of the OSPO Alliance are proud to announce the availability of version 1.2 of the Good Governance Initiative (GGI) Handbook. One year after the second version of the handbook, significant progres has been achieved, providing a more sophisticated and accurate support to organizations of all types in their move to establish OSPOs (Open Source Program Offices). 

The release V1.2 includes updates and improvements on the following topics:

• Relationships: to maximise the value of inter-dependencies or optimal sequence of activities, we added links to related activities, where possible.
• InnerSource: addition of a new chapter about the use of open source principles and practices for software development within the confines of an organisation. Many companies deploy such an approach as they recognise the benefits of Open Source. Some GGI activities are particularly relevant in such a context.
• My GGI Board (GitLab board and website to monitor OSPO implementation): easier deployment and improved reporting on activity progress with new diagrams.

"The improvements in this new version of the manual are intentionally very specific and pragmatic" says Boris Baldassari, chairperson of the OSPO Alliance. "With this update, we're answering some very practical questions: where to start, what activities to prioritise, how to monitor and communicate about the implementation of my OSPO? And the fact that we're available in 6 languages makes it even easier to embrace Open Source."

"The GGI was of major help when we implemented the Paris City OSPO and its associated roadmap," adds Philippe Bareille, Open Source Office at Paris City. "This new version benefits as much from our experience as we have benefited from feedback from other players in the community".

In parallel of the availability of v1.2,  a huge translation effort was done recently, making the handbook available in six languages (see the related Press Release). GGI is presented publicly this week at EclipseCon, and will be visible afterwards in some major open source conferences, in Italy (SFScon, Bolzano, November 10-11) and in Paris (Open Source Experience, Paris, December 6-7).  The OnRamp monthly meeting series is another opportunity to discover OSPO Alliance and GGI, the existing tools and methods, and real-life OSPO stories. The November 17th OnRamp meeting, at 10:30 CET, Boris Baldassari will cover in details the new additions to this version.

The “Open Source Good Governance” handbook now available in six languages!

Thanks to the collaborative effort from the open source community, the OSPO Alliance GGI Handbook is today’s most translated document to help organisations building OSPOs. 

Paris, October 2, 2023 – The members of the OSPO Alliance are proud to announce the availability of the Good Governance Initiative Handbook in six languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese). With this major achievement, the handbook reaches out a potential of thousands of readers (472 millions of persons are speaking one of the translated languages, including the Brazilians).
The GGI methodology to help implement corporate-wide open source policies, and set up an OSPO “Open Source Program Office”, can now be easily exported and used worldwide. 

Thanks to the open translation process applied, a large number of contributors has already been involved and this number is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Based on the open source collaborative management tool Weblate, this process enables translators to benefit from an easy to use interface and tight version control integration, along with quality checks. Other languages will come in the future, including Chinese which has been started.

In parallel of translations, other developments are happening such as the improvement of the implementation methodology, with the GGI Automated Deployment feature. New governance rules allow today to manage the initiative as an open source project. Several Task Forces are also meeting regularly and addressing specific topics, such as the metrics integrated to measure successes at each step, or the integration of InnerSource in the methodology. 

The OnRamp monthly meeting series is a unique communication channel set up to give more visibility about the existing tools and methods, the best practices, but also to showcase testimonies and real-life OSPO stories. Join the next online OnRamp meeting, October 20 at 10:30 CEST, where Anne-Marie Scott, Apereo Foundation, will talk about OSPO in the Academic World. 

The GGI methodology will be soon presented publicly in some major open source conferences, in Italy (RIOS Open Source Week, October 3-5 in Roma and SFScon, Bolzano, November 10-11) and in Germany (EclipseCon, October 16-19, in Ludwisburg).

OW2 Announces Three OW2con’23 Best Project Awards

ASM, BlueMind and OCS Inventory win technology, market, and community awards, respectively.

Paris, June 14, 2023 - OW2, the international community of open source software for information systems announces, today at OW2con’23, the winners of OW2con'23 Best Project Awards. These awards recognize OW2 projects for their outstanding contribution in technology, community, and market performance. This year, the three winners of the OW2con'23 Best Project Awards are:

Technology Award: ASM
The OW2con'23 Best Project Technology Award goes to ASM, an all purpose Java bytecode manipulation and analysis framework that has successfully maintained a strong momentum of constant innovation well reflected in ASM 9.5, released in spring 2023 and including updates for Java 21. Supported by OW2 since 2002, the engineering library has reached a respectable Market Readiness Level of 6. It was created by Eric Bruneton during its PhD at INRIA.

Market Award: BlueMind
The OW2con’23 Best Project Market Award goes to BlueMind, an open source messaging, agenda and collaboration platform, with a loyal community of contributors, a strong user base appreciating its communication features and a growing marketplace. BlueMind supports LDAP directory synchronisation, mobile devices, webmail and Thunderbird clients. Moreover, videoconferencing features, Active Directory and Outlook connectors are available through subscriptions, making this platform a sovereign alternative to Microsoft Online Exchange and Google Workspace, notably for European organisations.

Community Award: OCS Inventory
The OW2con’23 Best Project Community Award goes to OCS Inventory, an open source computer and software asset management system integrating a software deployment solution. With an excellent Market Readiness Level of 8 and the French Gendarmerie actively involved in its development, OCS Inventory is aligned with multiple public and private organisation expectations. It meets IT support needs through its central management server, its compliance with the Snmp protocol, and useful reporting features to manage PC and connected device fleets of all sizes.

Prix de la technologie : ASM
Le prix OW2con'23 Best Project Technology Award est remis à ASM, un framework d'analyse et de manipulation de code Java qui a maintenu avec succès une forte dynamique d'innovation constante, reflétée dans ASM 9.5, sa version du printemps 2023 comprenant des mises à jour pour Java 21. NGI Search Supports Ten European Open Source Search Software

The first ten open source projects, selected after the NGI Search Open Call #1 early 2023, are now supported by the consortium members and funded by the European Commission.

Paris, 14 June 2023 – OW2, the international community of open source software for information systems and Mirko Presser, professor at Aarhus University (Denmark) and NGI Search coordinator, a cascade funding project showcased at OW2con’23, are proud to support ten open source software projects that may change the way we search, discover and use data and resources in general on the internet and the web.

The first ten winners were selected after two months of evaluation, from among 62 eligible proposals, out of a total of 81 applications received. They have just signed an agreement including a support from the NGI Search project five partners and a funding from the European Commission up to 150,000 € per project. The ten selected projects are:

1. Search-a-licious, by the Open Food Facts association: an open and scalable search platform for open data projects, easing the exploration of the Open Food Facts database.
2. TalentLayer, a toolkit to improve the interoperability of hiring and work platforms.
3. ChatDKG, a trusted, decentralised knowledge graph-based platform for critical knowledge discovery and environmental sustainability of EU buildings.
4. HeReFaNMi, Health-Related Fake News Mitigation, an automatic AI-based system for detecting health-related fake news.
5. LabDiscoveryEngine, a software for sharing laboratory equipment, allowing to publish, discover and access their resources securely.
6. Ma Dada, a citizen platform, based on open source software and linguistic models, aiming to make more discoverable the information stored by public authorities in France.
7. IoT twinning for digital product passports, the information identification and access service for digital devices, based on digital twins, for second-hand market and reuse: a partnership between the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the eReuse.org circular economy initiative.
8. TrustSearch, an AI software for decision-making based on critical thinking research, presenting different media approaches to a controversial issue.
9. SVP64 Power ISA Vector Optimisation for Search improves the energy efficiency of search algorithms via a hardware-optimised vector ISA (Instruction-Set Architecture).
10. On My Disk: search integration, the decentralised search system on personal data in the cloud, preserving data privacy.

Four further calls for projects are planned until spring 2024 to support some 50 European projects in total. These can be from independent entrepreneurs or developers, VSEs or SMEs, academic research organisations or non-profit organisations. The solutions must be innovative and have the potential to improve the privacy and security of users searching for information or resources on the internet.

The services offered by the NGI Search team facilitate the market adoption of such software; they include a beta test campaign, scientific and legal advice including open source licensing, assistance with the creation of marketing materials, as well as showcasing during open source and industry conferences. NGI Search soutient dix logiciels Européens open source de recherche sur Internet

Les 10 premiers projets open source, retenus après un premier appel début 2023, sont dorénavant accompagnés par le consortium NGI Search et financés par la Commission Européenne.

Paris, le 14 juin 2023 – OW2, la communauté internationale de logiciels open source pour les systèmes d’information et Mirko Presser, professeur à l’Université d’Aarhus (Danemark), coordinateur NGI Search – un projet de financement en cascade présenté sur OW2con’23, sont fiers de soutenir dix logiciels open source susceptibles de changer la façon dont nous cherchons, découvrons et utilisons les données et les ressources en général sur internet et sur le web.

Les dix premiers lauréats ont été retenus après deux mois d’évaluation, parmi 62 propositions éligibles, sur un total de 81 dossiers reçus. Ils viennent de signer un contrat de soutien incluant l’accompagnement des cinq partenaires du projet NGI Search et un financement de la Commision Européenne jusqu’à 150 000 € par projet. Les dix projets sélectionnés sont :

1. Search-a-licious, porté par l'association Open Food Facts : plateforme de recherche ouverte et évolutive pour les projets open data, facilitant notamment l’exploration de la base Open Food Facts.
2. TalentLayer, boîte à outils destinée à l'interopérabilité des plateformes de recherche d'emploi.
3. ChatDKG, plateforme de confiance, à base de graphe de connaissances décentralisé, pour la recherche de connaissances cruciales et la durabilité environnementale des bâtiments de l’UE.
4. HeReFaNMi, Health-Related Fake News Mitigation. Système automatique fondé sur l'IA pour détecter les fausses nouvelles liées aux soins de santé.
5. LabDiscoveryEngine, logiciel de partage d’équipements de laboratoires permettant de publier, découvrir et accéder à leurs ressources en toute sécurité.
6. Ma Dada, plateforme citoyenne, à base de logiciels libres et de modèles linguistiques, visant à rendre plus d'informations stockées par les autorités publiques en France découvrables.
7. IoT twinning for digital product passports, service d'identification et d’accès aux informations RSE d’appareils numériques, fondé sur les jumeaux numériques, pour le réemploi : partenariat entre l'Université Polytechnique de Catalogne et l'initiative d'économie circulaire eReuse.org.
   1.TrustSearch, outil d’IA pour la prise de décisions éclairées à partir de recherches fondées sur la pensée critique, présentant différentes approches médiatiques d'une question controversée.
8. SVP64 Power ISA Vector Optimisation for Search améliore l'efficacité énergétique des algorithmes de recherche via une une architecture ISA vectorielle optimisée au niveau matériel.
9. On My Disk: search integration, système de recherche décentralisé sur des données personnelles dans le cloud, préservant la vie privée.

OW2 links open source software to digital commons at OW2con’23

With 40 professional speakers from 8 different countries and 14 active open source sponsors, the OW2 community's annual conference addresses technical, organisational and societal issues. 

Paris, 5 June 2023 - OW2, the international community of open source software for information systems offers, at Orange Innovation Gardens in Paris Châtillon, several dozens of testimonials on the central theme of "open source software and digital commons". No fewer than 33 sessions and 4 face-to-face workshops will take place over the two days of 14-15 June 2023.

A growing number of public and private players are combining their efforts to develop common digital projects and usages, as alternatives to the dominant solutions from the global Internet giants. This trend reflects a cultural change that motivates the co-design, development and operation of digital resources by a community of players prepared to share the same rules of governance. The outcomes of these efforts include text and audiovisual content, databases and free software.

Just as Wikipedia forms an encyclopaedia of collective knowledge on the Internet, OpenStreetMap and Open Food Facts are becoming collaborative reference tools for dealing with geographical data and food products respectively. Digital commons and open source software share a number of characteristics: they serve a community, are inclusive, designed for sustainability, and free of proprietary dependency.

On Wednesday 14 June, three keynote speeches will launch OW2con’23: Philippe Latombe, member of the French parliament will address the protection of individual rights for cloud end users, Wolfgang Gehring, FOSS ambassador at Mercedes-Benz Tech Innovation will cover open source development practices and culture in corporations, and Jean-Luc Dorel, European Commission Project Officer will detail the Next Generation Internet programme. 

Next, the Dutch foundation NLNet will highlight the importance of commons such as dykes, mobile networks and social networks for the citizens of a flat country situated largely below sea level. This will be followed by three digital common stories from Open Food Facts, the Alps city of Echirolles, and the French Ministry of Education. 

We will also be discussing Open Data with the Dinum, the Open Data Hub, and the Datami project. Then, three uses of open-source tools will be described: migrating a proprietary wiki to XWiki, the AICS platform built with Knowage for monitoring sustainable development objectives, and the use of Ubuntu servers by Orange premises. 

During the Cloud & Security session, Christophe Maudoux from the Gendarmerie Nationale will specify how the LemonLDAP::NG WebSSO protects cross-server exchanges. Geir Horn from the University of Oslo will explain Morphemic's role in managing cross-cloud applications involving hardware accelerators. Florian Caringi from the BPCE group (Banque Populaire, Caisse d'Epargne) will summarize an OSPO success story with TOSIT. 

At the end of the day, three OW2 projects will receive an OW2con'23 Best Project Award for their exceptional contribution in terms of technology, community and market performance.

On Thursday 15 June 2023, seven testimonies will focus on the community management of open source projects (APH10, Hermine, QuickApp, INRAE, PrestaShop, Siemens, Babel.coop), followed by a round table on open source governance within large organisations, bringing together François Desmier (MAIF), Jacob Green (OSPO++), Gilles Rouvier (Lawways), Frédéric Aatz (Microsoft) and Simon Phipps (OSI). 

Funding for open source projects, the latest standards, and presentations by new OW2 members Belledonne Communications, OpenStudio, and Xenogenics will conclude the OW2con’23 annual conference.

Four workshops are planned this year, focusing on the OW2 Technology Council, CLIF performance testing, OSPOs at French universities, and OSS governance.

La conférence OW2con’23 relie les logiciels libres aux communs numériques

Grâce à 40 orateurs professionnels issus de 8 pays distincts et 14 sponsors actifs de l’open source, la conférence annuelle de la communauté OW2 traite d’enjeux techniques, organisationnels et sociétaux.

Paris, le 5 juin 2023 - OW2, la communauté internationale de logiciels open source pour les systèmes d’information propose, sur le site Orange Gardens de Châtillon, plusieurs dizaines de témoignages articulés autour du thème « logiciels open source et communs numériques ». Pas moins de 33 sessions et 4 ateliers se succèderont, en face à face, durant deux jours les 14 et 15 juin 2023.

Un nombre croissant d’acteurs publics et privés combinent leurs efforts pour faire émerger des projets et usages numériques communs, autant d’alternatives aux solutions dominantes des géants mondiaux de l’Internet. Cette tendance traduit un changement culturel qui encourage la co-conception, le développement et l’exploitation de ressources dématérialisées par une communauté d’acteurs prêts à partager les mêmes règles de gouvernance. Parmi les résultats de ces efforts, on trouve des contenus texte ou audiovisuels, des bases de données et des logiciels libres.

De même que Wikipedia forme une encyclopédie de connaissances collectives sur Internet, OpenStreetMap et Open Food Facts deviennent des outils de référence collaboratifs pour traiter respectivement les données géographiques ou les produits alimentaires. Communs numériques et logiciels open source partagent plusieurs caractéristiques : ils servent une communauté, se veulent durables, inclusifs, sans dépendance ni fondation propriétaires.

Mercredi 14 juin, trois discours inauguraux lanceront OW2con’23 : Philippe Latombe, député de la Vendée abordera la protection des droits individuels d’utilisateurs de services numériques, Wolfgang Gehring, ambassadeur open source de Mercedes-Benz Tech Innovation traitera de pratiques de développement et de culture open source, et Jean-Luc Dorel, chargé de programme à la Commission Européenne précisera le programme Next Generation Internet. 

Ensuite, la fondation hollandaise NLNet soulignera l’importance des biens communs comme les digues, les réseaux mobiles et les réseaux sociaux pour les habitants d’un plat pays en grande partie situé sous le niveau de la mer.
Trois témoignages de communs numériques suivront : Open Food Facts, la Ville d’Echirolles, et le Ministère de l’Education. 

Il sera aussi question d’Open Data avec la Dinum, Open Data Hub, et le projet Datami. Trois usages d’outils libres seront détaillés : la migration d’un wiki propriétaire vers XWiki, la plateforme bâtie avec Knowage par l’agence italienne AICS pour le suivi d’objectifs de développement durable, et l’usage de serveurs Ubuntu chez l’opérateur Orange.

Jeudi 15 juin, sept témoignages se succèderont autour du pilotage communautaire de projets open source (APH10, Hermine, QuickApp, INRAE, PrestaShop, Siemens, Babel.coop), puis une table ronde sur la gouvernance open source au sein de grandes organisations réunira François Desmier (MAIF), Jacob Green (OSPO++), Gilles Rouvier (Lawways), Frédéric Aatz (Microsoft) et Simon Phipps (OSI).

Le financement de projets open source, les derniers standards, et les présentations de nouveaux membres OW2 Belledonne Communications, OpenStudio, et Xenogenics concluront la conférence annuelle OW2con’23.
