June 2016 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - June 2016 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

OW2's mission is to facilitate the development of a portfolio of open source infrastructure software and foster a business ecosystem for the exploitation of its open source code base. From a business perspective, we know that code is just a fraction of the software value chain. To become an actual product, code needs documentation, packaging, training, and a whole range of marketing, technical, financial and legal support. Individual open source developers and foundations are generally not too concerned with delivering products. They create technology commons i.e. technology and components destined either to be used directly by users and integrators with the necessary skills, or embedded into products or integrated into commercial offerings we call distributions. Only companies leveraging the open source business model really invest in productizing their software. For the rest of us, the gap between creating code and actually delivering a product to market is a challenge. At OW2, we call this the Delivery Challenge, which we help our projects address through our marketplace and market readiness program. This is to be the theme of our upcoming annual conference, how can open source software best address the delivery challenge: Code to Product.

I am pleased to announce that OW2con'16 will be held in Paris on September 21-22 – two days of project presentations and roundtables kindly hosted by Mozilla France. Save the date!

This month I am delighted to welcome new OW2 Corporate Members Waarp, which develops and markets a powerful managed file transfer suite, and Wakanda, developer of a state-of-the-art mobile application development solution, singled out as a Gartner cool vendor 2016.

Thank you for your on-going support,

Cedric Thomas

PS: Project leaders: Do not forget to use the OW2 Forge to tell everybody about your project updates. News will appear on the OW2 forge, our home page and in this newsletter

Project News

New Projects

FusionDirectory has joined the OW2 code base, a solution for the management of data stored in an LDAP directory, edited by recently joined OW2 Consortium corporate member OpenSides. Benoit Mortier, FusionDirectory project leader and OpenSides CEO, is joining the Technology Council. FusionDirectory is currently being used for implementing the new OW2 user management service, and there is integration work underway with LemonLDAP::NG. FusionDirectory reinforces the OW2 identity stack. As such, it will naturally find its way within the OW2 PRISi Initiative.
