NGI Search Supports Ten European Open Source Search Software

The first ten open source projects, selected after the NGI Search Open Call #1 early 2023, are now supported by the consortium members and funded by the European Commission.

Paris, 14 June 2023 – OW2, the international community of open source software for information systems and Mirko Presser, professor at Aarhus University (Denmark) and NGI Search coordinator, a cascade funding project showcased at OW2con’23, are proud to support ten open source software projects that may change the way we search, discover and use data and resources in general on the internet and the web.

The first ten winners were selected after two months of evaluation, from among 62 eligible proposals, out of a total of 81 applications received. They have just signed an agreement including a support from the NGI Search project five partners and a funding from the European Commission up to 150,000 € per project. The ten selected projects are:

1. Search-a-licious, by the Open Food Facts association: an open and scalable search platform for open data projects, easing the exploration of the Open Food Facts database.
2. TalentLayer, a toolkit to improve the interoperability of hiring and work platforms.
3. ChatDKG, a trusted, decentralised knowledge graph-based platform for critical knowledge discovery and environmental sustainability of EU buildings.
4. HeReFaNMi, Health-Related Fake News Mitigation, an automatic AI-based system for detecting health-related fake news.
5. LabDiscoveryEngine, a software for sharing laboratory equipment, allowing to publish, discover and access their resources securely.
6. Ma Dada, a citizen platform, based on open source software and linguistic models, aiming to make more discoverable the information stored by public authorities in France.
7. IoT twinning for digital product passports, the information identification and access service for digital devices, based on digital twins, for second-hand market and reuse: a partnership between the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the eReuse.org circular economy initiative.
8. TrustSearch, an AI software for decision-making based on critical thinking research, presenting different media approaches to a controversial issue.
9. SVP64 Power ISA Vector Optimisation for Search improves the energy efficiency of search algorithms via a hardware-optimised vector ISA (Instruction-Set Architecture).
10. On My Disk: search integration, the decentralised search system on personal data in the cloud, preserving data privacy.

Four further calls for projects are planned until spring 2024 to support some 50 European projects in total. These can be from independent entrepreneurs or developers, VSEs or SMEs, academic research organisations or non-profit organisations. The solutions must be innovative and have the potential to improve the privacy and security of users searching for information or resources on the internet.

The services offered by the NGI Search team facilitate the market adoption of such software; they include a beta test campaign, scientific and legal advice including open source licensing, assistance with the creation of marketing materials, as well as showcasing during open source and industry conferences. NGI Search soutient dix logiciels Européens open source de recherche sur Internet

Les 10 premiers projets open source, retenus après un premier appel début 2023, sont dorénavant accompagnés par le consortium NGI Search et financés par la Commission Européenne.

Paris, le 14 juin 2023 – OW2, la communauté internationale de logiciels open source pour les systèmes d’information et Mirko Presser, professeur à l’Université d’Aarhus (Danemark), coordinateur NGI Search – un projet de financement en cascade présenté sur OW2con’23, sont fiers de soutenir dix logiciels open source susceptibles de changer la façon dont nous cherchons, découvrons et utilisons les données et les ressources en général sur internet et sur le web.

Les dix premiers lauréats ont été retenus après deux mois d’évaluation, parmi 62 propositions éligibles, sur un total de 81 dossiers reçus. Ils viennent de signer un contrat de soutien incluant l’accompagnement des cinq partenaires du projet NGI Search et un financement de la Commision Européenne jusqu’à 150 000 € par projet. Les dix projets sélectionnés sont :

1. Search-a-licious, porté par l'association Open Food Facts : plateforme de recherche ouverte et évolutive pour les projets open data, facilitant notamment l’exploration de la base Open Food Facts.
2. TalentLayer, boîte à outils destinée à l'interopérabilité des plateformes de recherche d'emploi.
3. ChatDKG, plateforme de confiance, à base de graphe de connaissances décentralisé, pour la recherche de connaissances cruciales et la durabilité environnementale des bâtiments de l’UE.
4. HeReFaNMi, Health-Related Fake News Mitigation. Système automatique fondé sur l'IA pour détecter les fausses nouvelles liées aux soins de santé.
5. LabDiscoveryEngine, logiciel de partage d’équipements de laboratoires permettant de publier, découvrir et accéder à leurs ressources en toute sécurité.
6. Ma Dada, plateforme citoyenne, à base de logiciels libres et de modèles linguistiques, visant à rendre plus d'informations stockées par les autorités publiques en France découvrables.
7. IoT twinning for digital product passports, service d'identification et d’accès aux informations RSE d’appareils numériques, fondé sur les jumeaux numériques, pour le réemploi : partenariat entre l'Université Polytechnique de Catalogne et l'initiative d'économie circulaire eReuse.org.
   1.TrustSearch, outil d’IA pour la prise de décisions éclairées à partir de recherches fondées sur la pensée critique, présentant différentes approches médiatiques d'une question controversée.
8. SVP64 Power ISA Vector Optimisation for Search améliore l'efficacité énergétique des algorithmes de recherche via une une architecture ISA vectorielle optimisée au niveau matériel.
9. On My Disk: search integration, système de recherche décentralisé sur des données personnelles dans le cloud, préservant la vie privée.

OW2 links open source software to digital commons at OW2con’23

With 40 professional speakers from 8 different countries and 14 active open source sponsors, the OW2 community's annual conference addresses technical, organisational and societal issues. 

Paris, 5 June 2023 - OW2, the international community of open source software for information systems offers, at Orange Innovation Gardens in Paris Châtillon, several dozens of testimonials on the central theme of "open source software and digital commons". No fewer than 33 sessions and 4 face-to-face workshops will take place over the two days of 14-15 June 2023.

A growing number of public and private players are combining their efforts to develop common digital projects and usages, as alternatives to the dominant solutions from the global Internet giants. This trend reflects a cultural change that motivates the co-design, development and operation of digital resources by a community of players prepared to share the same rules of governance. The outcomes of these efforts include text and audiovisual content, databases and free software.

Just as Wikipedia forms an encyclopaedia of collective knowledge on the Internet, OpenStreetMap and Open Food Facts are becoming collaborative reference tools for dealing with geographical data and food products respectively. Digital commons and open source software share a number of characteristics: they serve a community, are inclusive, designed for sustainability, and free of proprietary dependency.

On Wednesday 14 June, three keynote speeches will launch OW2con’23: Philippe Latombe, member of the French parliament will address the protection of individual rights for cloud end users, Wolfgang Gehring, FOSS ambassador at Mercedes-Benz Tech Innovation will cover open source development practices and culture in corporations, and Jean-Luc Dorel, European Commission Project Officer will detail the Next Generation Internet programme. 

Next, the Dutch foundation NLNet will highlight the importance of commons such as dykes, mobile networks and social networks for the citizens of a flat country situated largely below sea level. This will be followed by three digital common stories from Open Food Facts, the Alps city of Echirolles, and the French Ministry of Education. 

We will also be discussing Open Data with the Dinum, the Open Data Hub, and the Datami project. Then, three uses of open-source tools will be described: migrating a proprietary wiki to XWiki, the AICS platform built with Knowage for monitoring sustainable development objectives, and the use of Ubuntu servers by Orange premises. 

During the Cloud & Security session, Christophe Maudoux from the Gendarmerie Nationale will specify how the LemonLDAP::NG WebSSO protects cross-server exchanges. Geir Horn from the University of Oslo will explain Morphemic's role in managing cross-cloud applications involving hardware accelerators. Florian Caringi from the BPCE group (Banque Populaire, Caisse d'Epargne) will summarize an OSPO success story with TOSIT. 

At the end of the day, three OW2 projects will receive an OW2con'23 Best Project Award for their exceptional contribution in terms of technology, community and market performance.

On Thursday 15 June 2023, seven testimonies will focus on the community management of open source projects (APH10, Hermine, QuickApp, INRAE, PrestaShop, Siemens, Babel.coop), followed by a round table on open source governance within large organisations, bringing together François Desmier (MAIF), Jacob Green (OSPO++), Gilles Rouvier (Lawways), Frédéric Aatz (Microsoft) and Simon Phipps (OSI). 

Funding for open source projects, the latest standards, and presentations by new OW2 members Belledonne Communications, OpenStudio, and Xenogenics will conclude the OW2con’23 annual conference.

Four workshops are planned this year, focusing on the OW2 Technology Council, CLIF performance testing, OSPOs at French universities, and OSS governance.

La conférence OW2con’23 relie les logiciels libres aux communs numériques

Grâce à 40 orateurs professionnels issus de 8 pays distincts et 14 sponsors actifs de l’open source, la conférence annuelle de la communauté OW2 traite d’enjeux techniques, organisationnels et sociétaux.

Paris, le 5 juin 2023 - OW2, la communauté internationale de logiciels open source pour les systèmes d’information propose, sur le site Orange Gardens de Châtillon, plusieurs dizaines de témoignages articulés autour du thème « logiciels open source et communs numériques ». Pas moins de 33 sessions et 4 ateliers se succèderont, en face à face, durant deux jours les 14 et 15 juin 2023.

Un nombre croissant d’acteurs publics et privés combinent leurs efforts pour faire émerger des projets et usages numériques communs, autant d’alternatives aux solutions dominantes des géants mondiaux de l’Internet. Cette tendance traduit un changement culturel qui encourage la co-conception, le développement et l’exploitation de ressources dématérialisées par une communauté d’acteurs prêts à partager les mêmes règles de gouvernance. Parmi les résultats de ces efforts, on trouve des contenus texte ou audiovisuels, des bases de données et des logiciels libres.

De même que Wikipedia forme une encyclopédie de connaissances collectives sur Internet, OpenStreetMap et Open Food Facts deviennent des outils de référence collaboratifs pour traiter respectivement les données géographiques ou les produits alimentaires. Communs numériques et logiciels open source partagent plusieurs caractéristiques : ils servent une communauté, se veulent durables, inclusifs, sans dépendance ni fondation propriétaires.

Mercredi 14 juin, trois discours inauguraux lanceront OW2con’23 : Philippe Latombe, député de la Vendée abordera la protection des droits individuels d’utilisateurs de services numériques, Wolfgang Gehring, ambassadeur open source de Mercedes-Benz Tech Innovation traitera de pratiques de développement et de culture open source, et Jean-Luc Dorel, chargé de programme à la Commission Européenne précisera le programme Next Generation Internet. 

Ensuite, la fondation hollandaise NLNet soulignera l’importance des biens communs comme les digues, les réseaux mobiles et les réseaux sociaux pour les habitants d’un plat pays en grande partie situé sous le niveau de la mer.
Trois témoignages de communs numériques suivront : Open Food Facts, la Ville d’Echirolles, et le Ministère de l’Education. 

Il sera aussi question d’Open Data avec la Dinum, Open Data Hub, et le projet Datami. Trois usages d’outils libres seront détaillés : la migration d’un wiki propriétaire vers XWiki, la plateforme bâtie avec Knowage par l’agence italienne AICS pour le suivi d’objectifs de développement durable, et l’usage de serveurs Ubuntu chez l’opérateur Orange.

Nouvelle version novembre 2022 pour le cadre de bonne gouvernance open source « GGI »

Lors de l’Open Source Experience à Paris, l'OSPO Alliance a annoncé la disponibilité de GGI (Good Governance Initiative) 1.1. Le cadre méthodologique a réalisé des progrès significatifs et est maintenant utilisé dans la structuration de démarches « OSPO ».

Paris, 24 novembre, 2022 – Après un an d'existence, l'OSPO Alliance annonce la sortie de la version 1.1 du cadre méthodologique proposé par l’initiative GGI de bonne gouvernance de l’open source. Cette version comprend des améliorations majeures, notamment un processus de traduction, un déploiement automatisé et un premier cas d'utilisation, présentés à Open Source Experience (OSXP), les 8 et 9 novembre. Le cadre méthodologique de GGI aide à évaluer et à améliorer la sensibilisation, la conformité et la gouvernance de l'open source au sein des organisations. Aujourd'hui, GGI fait partie intégrante de l’OSPO Alliance, lancée en 2021 par des organisations européennes à but non lucratif (OW2, Eclipse Foundation, OpenForum Europe et Foundation for Public Code). Dans le cadre des outils fournis par l'initiative, le manuel GGI « GGI Handbook » distingue 25 activités, de l'analyse des composants logiciels et des meilleures pratiques de développement, à la formation, aux RH et à l'éducation des cadres, qui sont organisées en objectifs, de la découverte à l'engagement et à la stratégie. Ce processus d'évaluation aboutit à des tableaux de bord permettant de décrire et d'évaluer comment chaque activité est mise en œuvre dans une organisation.
Avec l’arrivée de la version 1.1, la méthodologie  GGI inclut les nouvelles fonctionnalités suivantes :
• Disponibilité linguistique et traduction du manuel GGI : Un processus de traduction ouvert a été mis en place et s'appuie sur le logiciel open source weblate. Des versions allemande et française sont déjà disponibles, et trois autres langues sont en cours de traduction: portugais, espagnol, italien.
• Déploiement automatisé : la nouvelle fonctionnalité de déploiement permet à tout utilisateur d'installer rapidement sa propre instance sur GitLab et d'accéder à un tableau de bord personnalisé à l'aide de l’interface "My GGI Board".
• Cas d’usages : la dissémination, l’adoption et le déploiement de la méthodologie pour obtenir des retours des utilisateurs fait partie des objectifs de l'initiative. Une première implémentation et témoignage client avec la Ville de Paris est disponible et était présentée lors de l'OSXP par Philippe Bareille, Responsable Open Source.

D'autres développements sont sur la feuille de route pour les mois à venir, tels que l'enrichissement du manuel, l'ajout de nouvelles métriques pour mieux suivre les progrès réalisés, le déploiement sur plusieurs plates-formes et davantage d'événements proposés via la série de webinaires OnRamp.

New release November 2022 for the open source good governance framework

At Open Source Experience in Paris, members of the OSPO Alliance announce release of GGI 1.1. « GGI » framework achieved significant progresses and is now in use to help building OSPOs.

Paris, November 7, 2022 – After one year of existence, the OSPO Alliance announces the release of version 1.1 of the methodology framework proposed by the Good Governance Initiative (GGI). This version includes major improvements (i.e. translation process, automated deployment and a first use case) which will be presented at Open Source Experience, Nov. 8-9.

The Good Governance Initiative (GGI) methodological framework helps to assess and improve open-source awareness, compliance and governance within organizations. Today the GGI is an integral part of the OSPO Alliance, which was launched in 2021 by European non-profit organizations (OW2, Eclipse Foundation, OpenForum Europe and Foundation for Public Code).  As part of the tools provided by the initiative, the GGI Handbook distinguishes 25 activities, from Software Composition Analysis and development best practices, to training, HR and executives' education, which are organized into goals, from discovery to engagement and strategy. This evaluation process leads to scorecards enabling to describe and assess how each activity is implemented in a company.

With the achievement of the version 1.1, the GGI framework includes the following features :
    • Language availability and translation of the GGI Handbook: An open translation process  has been set up and is based on the dedicated open source project weblate. German and French versions are already available, and three others languages are under preparation : Portuguese, Spanish, Italian.
    • Automated Deployment: The new deployment feature enables any user to quickly install its own instance on GitLab and get access to a customized dashboard using the “My GGI Board”.
    • Success Stories: Developing market adoption by engaging users and organizations of all sizes, and get market feedback is part of the initiative’s objectives. A first implementation and customer testimonial with the City of Paris is available and will be presented during Open Source Experience by Philippe Bareille, Open Source Officer on November 8 at 17:45.
Further developments are on the roadmap for the coming months, such as enrichment of the handbook, integration of metrics to better track progress, deployment on multiple platforms, and more events proposed through the OnRamp webinar series.

• L’initiative de bonne gouvernance open source (GGI) portée par l’OSPO Alliance parle de son cadre méthodologique pour aider les organisations à structurer l'utilisation des logiciels libres vers un OSPO.

Le symposium Cloud – Datacenter + Infra accueille 46 conférenciers, DSI, RSSI, DPO et experts des projets d’infrastructures et de services répartis,
incluant la conférence Open Cloud par OW2, dédiée aux projets open source. 

Paris, le 13 juin 2022 – Le symposium Cloud - Datacenter + Infra devient le point de départ des projets de transformation numérique planifiés cet été et au-delà. Pas moins de 8 discours inauguraux et 12 débats publics sont également distribués entre les salles Monet et Picasso dédiées respectivement au Cloud et aux Datacenters & Infrastructures. 

Le programme 2022 considère la cybersécurité, la conformité réglementaire, l’intelligence des données et l'empreinte environnementale du datacenter comme quatre enjeux principaux, au moment où le système d’information s’appuie sur un ou plusieurs clouds, parfois sur l’edge computing, des réseaux fixes et mobiles, et un nombre croissant de services managés. 

Au total, plus de 200 marques sont représentées au fil des stands et dans les conférences. Organisateurs, exposants et intervenants ont à cœur d’échanger leur point de vue avec les 6 000 visiteurs attendus, décideurs IT pour la plupart. Ils sont prêts à signaler des pistes concrètes de migration, à remonter des cas d’usages des technologies fructueuses dans leur environnement, par exemple pour extraire de la valeur à partir de données captées en temps réel.

Tendances technologiques, modèles économiques et applications à la demande s’appuient volontiers sur des projets open source à présent. L’Open Cloud par OW2 réunit une douzaine d’orateurs internationaux, experts des logiciels au code source ouvert. Il est accessible à partir de 16h30 le 29 juin et de 9h30 à midi le 30 juin, dans le Hall 5.1 toujours.


IoT World et le Symposium Cloud font la part belle aux infrastructures, plateformes et services délivrés à la demande. Après deux années de transition pour cause de crise sanitaire, ils deviennent le reflet d’un événement incontournable pour l’évolution des applications distribuées d’entreprise et de leurs socles technologiques.

New CEO Pierre-Yves Gibello announced by the OW2 Board of Directors

The OW2 open source association board of directors is announcing that Pierre-Yves Gibello
has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer effective Friday, April 4, 2022. 

Paris, France, March 3, 2022 – OW2, the community that promotes free software for information systems, is delighted to welcome Pierre-Yves Gibello as its new CEO. The software industry expert and passionate open source explorer will build on the foundations laid by Cedric Thomas since 15 years. 

Pierre-Yves Gibello has worked for small and large IT players, as well as research institutes. He has created his own company, and still develops software code, while remaining curious and agile, practising alpinism, backpacking travels and cross-country skiing.

« OW2 became globally recognised during the last 15 years, and its code base increasingly focused on open source software solutions for corporate information systems. Having said that, the vision and the values remain unchanged. The vision is that open source is part of the global software industry and our driving values are still openness, transparency, fairness, trust and independence, » said Cedric Thomas, OW2 CEO since its inception in 2007.

OW2 ambitions to re-inforce its position as key player in the global ecosystem of open source communities with a particular attention given to the development of OW2 Market Readiness Levels and the OW2 Open Source Good Governance Initiative, both of which contribute to the professionalisation of open source software.

The OW2 Quick App Initiative publicly showcased at Open Source Experience

Initiative participants introduced the quick app dynamic to the wider open source ecosystem through a dedicated booth, industry panel and talk. 

Paris, November 29 - November 9-10 saw the OW2 Quick App Initiative showcase at the inaugural Open Source Experience event in Paris. Representatives from the /e/ Foundation, Famobi, FRVR and Huawei jointly animated a booth, industry panel, and conference talk.

The event is one of the largest open source events in Europe, bringing together an eclectic mix of companies, organizations, decision makers and aficionados. This year saw more than 5000 visitors and also hosted Amélie de Montchalin, French Minister of Transformation and Public Services, who announced actions for accelerating the use of open source software within public administrations.

At the initiative booth, Danish headquartered FRVR showcased their amazing quick app, Worlds FRVR, a new block-building sandbox game that has already organically grown to over a million monthly active users across platforms.

Joining FRVR on the booth, Famobi GmbH, one of Europe’s leading quick app and HTML5 game companies, helped expound the quick app concept to visitors. And both companies, alongside Huawei and luminary Gaël Duval, provided invaluable insight into the need and potential of quick apps to create a new and more sovereign app ecosystem in Europe during the panel discussion.

To round off the event, Martin Alvarez representing Huawei, gave a “standing room only” talk introducing the concept of mini-apps, the W3C MiniApp working group, and quick apps as an implementation of W3C standards.
