[OW2 Newsletter - March 2017 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

I am pleased to announce that our annual conference, OW2con'17 is to be held on June 26-27 at the new Orange Gardens Innovation Center near Paris. Save the date and check out the Call for Presentations! The theme of this year's conference is New Challenges of Mainstream Open Source Software.

A recurring theme over the past couple of years, “Open source and Linux have won” gained renewed attention since Microsoft became a member of the Linux foundation. Open source software (OSS) going mainstream brings a whole range of new challenges to the open source ecosystem. Even OW2's market sweet spot may be shifting. OW2 was born out of enterprise information system infrastructure where software is not dependent on a company's vertical sector – a CMS or an ESB works practically the same way whether in a bank or a hospital – and where sharing and re-use across all sectors bring critical mass and maximize economies of scale. But, as it becomes increasingly mainstream, OSS expands into new territories where its advantages are not quite so obvious. Three examples: with the SaaS model free access to source code is not as important as data protection; in the IoT world, software becomes dependent on usage specific hardware and standards and its sharing power is eroded; going mainstream OSS has to prove its worth to conventional business managers who are far from free software advocates. These are some of the new challenges underpinning the theme of this year's annual conference.

This month we are pleased to welcome new OW2 Corporate Member Teclib, an open source software vendor specializing in infrastructure management and security.

Thank you for your on-going support!

Cedric Thomas
