September 2019 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - September 2019 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

As we all know, computing freedom is defined by the right to use, read, modify and distribute the code; in a nutshell, by having total control of the software. Ten years ago, cloud computing and Software as a Service introduced control of personal and corporate data as a critical determinant of freedom. Today, AI is in its own way challenging the pivotal role of the code by shifting attention towards the control of not just personal and corporate data, but data at the level of society. A world where programs learn from their own executions, improve themselves and are determined more by the quality of the data that train them than the skills of programmers may well call into question the role of developer communities. Open source communities have gained much knowledge in a world determined by the production of software; such communities still have a strategic role to play, and are well-positioned to take on the exciting challenges of diversifying and expanding IT that lie ahead.

OW2 will actively participate in the Paris Open Source Summit. We are planning to organize a community village and we will organise this year again the Open Source Community Summit, and sessions on OSS in Big Cities, Collaborative Innovation and OSS Governance. Note the Call for Presentation is still open, do not miss this opportunity!

The Technology Council has accepted Dyne.org’s virtual-machine-based cryptograhic technology, Zenroom, as a new project in the OW2 code base.

Thank you for your on-going support.

Cedric Thomas
