July 2019 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - July 2019 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

The theme of OW2con this year Open Source: Toward Industry Maturity highlighted the new status of open source software. This evolution brings at least five challenges to communities such as OW2.

  1. The first concerns free riders. How can we get organisations like integrators and users to understand it is in their own long-term interests to contribute back to projects?
  2. The second is uncontrolled re-use, which must be professionalised. We need tools and best practices to manage endless dependencies and properly assess open source projects.
  3. The third challenge is SaaS. How critical will our four foundational freedoms going to be if they do not suffice to define openness, should open source licenses adapt?
  4. The fourth challenge is verticalisation. With open source everywhere, how are we going to fare as we move out of our comfort zone of horizontal components, tools and application platforms?
  5. The fifth and final (for now) challenge is the damage that can be caused by opportunistic foundations leveraging the mechanics of open source only to develop technologies and market positions.

These challenges will frame our roadmap for the months to come. Stay tuned.

On a lighter note, a big thank you to all the speakers and attendees who helped to make OW2con'19 our best annual conference ever! And our congratulations go to this year's OW2con Best Project Awards, XWiki for the Community Award, ProActive for the Innovation Award and CLIF for the Market Award! Special thanks to Gold Sponsors Orange who once again kindly provided the venue and 7bulls.com for their generosity. We would also like to thank Engineering, Thales, Aegis, Bluemind, City of Paris, Inria and Worteks and our community partner Systematic for their support. Check out the conference slides, videos, and photos and, if you were able to attend the event, please fill in our short feedback questionnaire to help us make next year's OW2con even better!

Thank you for your on-going support and a wonderful summer for our readers in the northern hemisphere!
