December 2018 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - December 2018 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

As you no doubt know I have often explained that open source as we see it today is not a monolithic world but rather the combination of three layers resulting from its own history. Well, with the recently announced multi-billion of dollar open source acquisitions (IBM-RedHat, Microsoft-GitHub, Salesforce-MuleSoft, etc.), we are now seeing the fourth layer, and I talked about it at BBoost. Free software came about in 1983 as a movement launched by and for developers working collaboratively on software projects; the developer layer is our foundation because it is technically efficient. Then, in the mid-1990s, commercial open source start-ups grabbed market shares from proprietary software vendors across all product categories of enterprise information systems; they came up with profitable business models, and the enterprise layer continues to grow. With the explosion of cloud computing, big data, IoT, etc. in 2010, open source became the de facto vehicle for collaborative innovation; it works well because companies prefer a share in winning ecosystems than risk investing in the wrong technologies. What these billion-dollar open source mergers tell us is that open source has become just another capitalistic opportunity for conventional board members and investors. From the developer to the enterprise to the ecosystem and now to the industry layer, open source is reaching maturity.

If you’re in Paris, come visit OW2 at Paris Open Source Summit, the flagship event of the European open source community. OW2 is organizing the Community Summit and the OSS in Big Cities session and our booth will showcase members and projects, such as 7bulls.comSTAMP and Melodic. I take this occasion to announce the STAMP beta-testing campaign: download the tools and give us your feedback!

Thank you for your support and… Season's greetings to all!

Thanking you for your on-going support!

Cedric Thomas
