The Open Source Initiative becomes OW2 Associate Member
Both non-profit organizations to work more closely together, establishing sustainable trust
between open source developers, corporate, education and government users.
Palo Alto (California), Paris (France), June 26, 2017 - OW2, the global community for open source infrastructure software and application platforms, and the Open Source Initiative (OSI), the global steward of the Open Source Definition, are announcing today at OW2con’17 that OSI is becoming an associate member of OW2.
While the annual conference of OW2 is opening today, in Paris Châtillon Orange Gardens R&D building, the cooperation to promote innovative and free software between OSI and OW2 is already tangible:
- OW2con’17 central theme is “New Challenges of Mainstream Open Source Software”. It focuses on open source software as a viable and a mature option for corporate and government end-users. OW2 and OSI joining efforts will contribute to overcome the fear of open source software and to educate more decision makers.
- Simon Phipps, pro-bono Director of the Open Source Initiative, is providing a keynote speech about Open Source: the Third Decade, from 11:00am to 11:30am today, Monday June 26, 2017: OSI was established in 1998, and with it the term "open source" to describe software licensed to enable collaboration around free software. 2018 consequently sees the start of the third decade of open source. What changes will we see? What principles can guide us?
- Cedric Thomas, CEO of OW2 says: “As OW2 is celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Open Source Initiative is about to start its third decade. I’m looking forward to see our teams, members and communities working more closely. Together, we can address more market needs while developing new synergies”.
- Patrick Masson, Director and General Manager of the Open Source Initiative, acknowledges:
“If indeed, as many now say, "open source has won", then we all should thank OW2 for playing their part over the past 10 years as a visionary, innovator and leader. All the best for the next ten”.
This partnership will bring OSI and OW2 members the benefits of a greater technical alignment of the two organizations, joint workshops and community events. For the latest opportunities, please visit our websites.

OW2 Open Source Accessibility Initiative Operates in Seven Domains
Designed to improve workplace usability for everyone, the OW2 OSAi community initiative is now active. Heralded by Orange, OW2 OSAi is organized into seven domains, now combining a dozen of accessibility projects.
PARIS, France, June 13, 2017- OW2, the global community for open source infrastructure software and application platforms reveals the OW2 Open Source Accessibility initiative (OSAi), a community-driven initiative designed to develop open source technologies and share best practices in the field of accessibility.
Heralded by Orange, the OW2 OSAi initiative is building synergies between OW2 members and the larger community around open and compliant digital solutions for people with physical or cognitive difficulties. This neutral forum is now operating on seven domains:
- Guidelines and best practices: design methodologies (development, implementation), accessibility criteria and evaluation methodologies for testing accessible digital products and services
- Measuring and auditing tools: solutions to increase the accessibility of digital products, to ensure that web sites or software meet accessibility requirements and to measure it over time.
- Training: solutions and materials to help education and awareness, especially in digital accessibility.
- Tools for communication: solutions to improve accessibility in communication and telecommunication.
- Development tools: solutions to give accessible frameworks to developers
- Accessible user interfaces: solutions to facilitate the use of digital software or hardware
- Positioning, navigating and mobility: solutions to ease the navigation in any environment, indoor or outdoor
Initial participants in the initiative include DINSIC, the IT and Digital Agency of the French Government, La Poste, the French postal service company, Worldline, the European leader in payment and transaction services, Smile, a leading European integrator of open source solutions, digital accessibility agency Océane Consulting and eAccessibility consulting firm Atalan. Individual participants are also involved in international companies, such as Cefriel in Italy or Research & Development Institutes.
“Accessibility is a fundamental right and a common need, shared by all enterprises,” says Christian Paterson, Head of Open Source Governance at Orange. “We look forward to leveraging OW2's open source community model to collectively explore accessibility research and application domains,” he adds.
At OW2, initiatives are joint efforts by its members that aim to foster use of OW2 technologies by mainstream systems integrators, end-users and software vendors. Within an Initiative, OW2 members work together to develop technical integration between projects as well as synergies to address specific market needs.
To join and contribute in the OW2 accessibility initiative, please register and accept the OSAi charter: http://l.ow2.org/OSAi

Engineering Group and OW2 announce Knowage as reference brand for open source business analytics offering
The new version of SpagoBI will be available with Knowage, now in the OW2 offering
O’reilly Convention, Austin (Texas), May 9, 2017 – Engineering Group - the leading Italian software and services company - and OW2 - one of the top-4 global open source organizations - announce Knowage, the new brand for SpagoBI project.
The new brand marks the value of the well-known open source business intelligence and analytical suite after significant functional and technological transformations and a new offering model. Knowage supports a modern vision of the data analytics, providing new self-service capabilities that give autonomy to the end-user, now able to build his own analysis and explore his own data space, also combining data that come from different sources.
The user experience has been entirely redefined and is now adaptive to different devices and immediately usable with tablets and smartphones. Moreover, all the designers are now web-based, making the Meta module deprecated and the Studio module strictly related to the report (Birt/Jasper engine) design task.
Knowage is available under two versions:
• the community edition, open source, downloadable form the OW2 forge, including the whole set of analytical capabilities;
• the enterprise edition, provided and guaranteed by Engineering, including facilities for the system administrator and supported by a new commercial offering
“Knowage CE provides a lot of interesting features that current SpagoBI users were waiting for” says Grazia Cazzin, SpagoBI project leader and now Knowage product director. “The value provided by this new version and the revolution in our community and business models led us to build a new brand to mark the birth of a new age”.
“We are proud and happy to support this move towards the Knowage product line and we will be supporting it actively in the future” says Cédric Thomas, OW2 CEO. “Knowage will bring value to OW2 code base by giving to the SpagoBI solution a new and stronger dimension”.
The Knowage project is showcased at OSCON from May 10th to 11th on the OW2 booth (#123-4).
