New release November 2022 for the open source good governance framework

New release November 2022 for the open source good governance framework

At Open Source Experience in Paris, members of the OSPO Alliance announce release of GGI 1.1. « GGI » framework achieved significant progresses and is now in use to help building OSPOs.

Paris, November 7, 2022 – After one year of existence, the OSPO Alliance announces the release of version 1.1 of the methodology framework proposed by the Good Governance Initiative (GGI). This version includes major improvements (i.e. translation process, automated deployment and a first use case) which will be presented at Open Source Experience, Nov. 8-9.

The Good Governance Initiative (GGI) methodological framework helps to assess and improve open-source awareness, compliance and governance within organizations. Today the GGI is an integral part of the OSPO Alliance, which was launched in 2021 by European non-profit organizations (OW2, Eclipse Foundation, OpenForum Europe and Foundation for Public Code).  As part of the tools provided by the initiative, the GGI Handbook distinguishes 25 activities, from Software Composition Analysis and development best practices, to training, HR and executives' education, which are organized into goals, from discovery to engagement and strategy. This evaluation process leads to scorecards enabling to describe and assess how each activity is implemented in a company.

With the achievement of the version 1.1, the GGI framework includes the following features :
    • Language availability and translation of the GGI Handbook: An open translation process  has been set up and is based on the dedicated open source project weblate. German and French versions are already available, and three others languages are under preparation : Portuguese, Spanish, Italian.
    • Automated Deployment: The new deployment feature enables any user to quickly install its own instance on GitLab and get access to a customized dashboard using the “My GGI Board”.
    • Success Stories: Developing market adoption by engaging users and organizations of all sizes, and get market feedback is part of the initiative’s objectives. A first implementation and customer testimonial with the City of Paris is available and will be presented during Open Source Experience by Philippe Bareille, Open Source Officer on November 8 at 17:45.
Further developments are on the roadmap for the coming months, such as enrichment of the handbook, integration of metrics to better track progress, deployment on multiple platforms, and more events proposed through the OnRamp webinar series.

About OSPO Alliance and GGI:
The Good Governance Initiative (GGI) proposes a methodological framework to assess and improve open-source awareness, compliance and governance in any type of organizations, helping them to build and maintain a successful OSPO. The GGI was initiated by OW2 and is developed by the OSPO Alliance. More information  at : http://www.ospo-alliance.org.

New CEO Pierre-Yves Gibello announced by the OW2 Board of Directors

New CEO Pierre-Yves Gibello announced by the OW2 Board of Directors

The OW2 open source association board of directors is announcing that Pierre-Yves Gibello
has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer effective Friday, April 4, 2022.

Paris, France, March 3, 2022 – OW2, the community that promotes free software for information systems, is delighted to welcome Pierre-Yves Gibello as its new CEO. The software industry expert and passionate open source explorer will build on the foundations laid by Cedric Thomas since 15 years.

Pierre-Yves Gibello has worked for small and large IT players, as well as research institutes. He has created his own company, and still develops software code, while remaining curious and agile, practising alpinism, backpacking travels and cross-country skiing.

« OW2 became globally recognised during the last 15 years, and its code base increasingly focused on open source software solutions for corporate information systems. Having said that, the vision and the values remain unchanged. The vision is that open source is part of the global software industry and our driving values are still openness, transparency, fairness, trust and independence, » said Cedric Thomas, OW2 CEO since its inception in 2007.

OW2 ambitions to re-inforce its position as key player in the global ecosystem of open source communities with a particular attention given to the development of OW2 Market Readiness Levels and the OW2 Open Source Good Governance Initiative, both of which contribute to the professionalisation of open source software.

Pierre-Yves Gibello, OW2 new CEO, added : « What differentiates us from other open source organisations is our associative spirit, democratic governance (with small companies and individuals being really influential), and mind openness: we don't reject any project, license or initiative by principle, instead we make collegial choices. [...] Big actors and established projects are joining us: companies like AlterWay, Microsoft, Huawei, institutions like Fraunhofer or City of Paris, projects like Rocket.Chat or BlueMind. And some new announces will come soon… »

The OW2 Quick App Initiative publicly showcased at Open Source Experience

The OW2 Quick App Initiative publicly showcased at Open Source Experience

Initiative participants introduced the quick app dynamic to the wider open source ecosystem through a dedicated booth, industry panel and talk.

Paris, November 29 - November 9-10 saw the OW2 Quick App Initiative showcase at the inaugural Open Source Experience event in Paris. Representatives from the /e/ Foundation, Famobi, FRVR and Huawei jointly animated a booth, industry panel, and conference talk.

The event is one of the largest open source events in Europe, bringing together an eclectic mix of companies, organizations, decision makers and aficionados. This year saw more than 5000 visitors and also hosted Amélie de Montchalin, French Minister of Transformation and Public Services, who announced actions for accelerating the use of open source software within public administrations.

At the initiative booth, Danish headquartered FRVR showcased their amazing quick app, Worlds FRVR, a new block-building sandbox game that has already organically grown to over a million monthly active users across platforms.

“Instant apps at native quality are the inevitable future. There is no longer any technical barrier blocking the magical experiences they can deliver. FRVR supports quick apps because they provide a realistic pathway to that future being fair and equitable for both platforms and developers.” Kester Bishop,  Strategic Projects lead, FRVR

Joining FRVR on the booth, Famobi GmbH, one of Europe’s leading quick app and HTML5 game companies, helped expound the quick app concept to visitors. And both companies, alongside Huawei and luminary Gaël Duval, provided invaluable insight into the need and potential of quick apps to create a new and more sovereign app ecosystem in Europe during the panel discussion.

“Times have changed and we live in a faced paced environment where users look for frictionless, instant access to applications. OSXP gave us the chance to connect with like-minded people in the area of web-technology.  We at Famobi always strive to bring new standards to the market and with the OW2 Quick App Initiative we do it again.” Ilker Aydin, Founder and CEO, Famobi GmbH

To round off the event, Martin Alvarez representing Huawei, gave a “standing room only” talk introducing the concept of mini-apps, the W3C MiniApp working group, and quick apps as an implementation of W3C standards.

OW2 Quick App Initiative participation to this superb event was made possible thanks to the support of Huawei, event Gold sponsor, and its commitment to the open source ecosystem in Europe.

“Huawei is proud to support the OW2 Quick App Initiative. It’s a wonderful example of open discussion and collaboration across domains and borders. Sponsoring the Open Source Experience event allowed us to show our appreciation for the European open source ecosystem, and meet its many unique and varied actors.” Zhao Bo, Director Consumer Business Group, Huawei Europe Standards and Industry Development.

The Open Source Experience caps a fantastic post-launch period for the initiative that saw it gain peer recognition from Systematic’s Hub Open Source, launch an extensive developer portal, talk at 4 conferences, and welcome onboard 2 awesome new participants:
    • Digital privacy and alternative mobile platform proponent e Foundation (France).
    • Smart home interoperability solutions provider, Olisto (Holland).

“Anything that can help the emergence of a new open source standard in mobile application development should be encouraged and supported. This is the reason for our support for the OW2 Quick App Initiative.” Philippe Montargès, President of the Systematic Open Source Hub

“The mobile application ecosystem needs new and independent standards to design faster and easier access to applications. That's the reason why e Foundation supports the MiniApps/Quick Apps initiative that draws a new horizon for app users and publishers.” Gaël Duval, Founder and President, /e/ Foundation

New release 1.2 for the OSPO Alliance Good Governance (GGI) Handbook

OSS_Good_Governance_Handbook_UK_480.jpgThe Open Source Good Governance Handbook collaboratively developed in the framework of the OW2 Open Source Good Governance initiative was announced at the Paris Open Source Experience 2021 by the OSPO Alliance. Discover the handbook online or download it. Paperback version can also be purchased at Lulu or Amazon.

OSPO Alliance Announces the OSS Good Governance Handbook
Tuesday, November 9, 2021 - 08:00

The OSPO Alliance today announced the publication of the first version of the Open Source Good Governance Handbook. Collaboratively developed in the framework of the OW2 Open Source Good Governance initiative, the handbook introduces a methodology to implement professional management of open source software in an organisation. It addresses the need to use open source software properly and fairly, safeguarding organisations from technical, legal and IP threats, and maximising for them the advantages of open source.

This methodology goes beyond compliance and liability. It is about building awareness in communities of end-users (open software developers themselves) and systems integrators, and developing mutually beneficial relationships within the FOSS ecosystem.

The Good Governance Handbook provides a comprehensive methodology based on a few key concepts. From a generic perspective, the approach is structured along five Goals (Usage, Trust, Culture, Engagement and Strategy), each supported by five Canonical Activities described in the handbook. At execution stage, the methodology requires adapting the Canonical Activities to the specific condition of each organisation by transferring them into Customized Activity Scorecards which, put together, constitute a roadmap for setting up and running an Open Source Program Office (OSPO) and a management system to monitor progress.

The OSS Good Governance Handbook is the first major publication of the OSPO Alliance to help companies and public institutions implement an Open Source Program Office (OSPO).  The OSPO Alliance provides an organisation-neutral venue for contributors to share resources, experience and skills. Supporters can opt to contribute in several ways: at the new OSPO.Zone website, contribute directly to the next steps of the Good Governance Initiative methodology, and share their experiences (both successes and failures!) as case studies or with more informal short interviews.

“This publication is the result of nearly two years of collaborative work with OW2 members and OSS practitioners. We are now moving to the implementation and customization phase with some key adopters of the methodology. We are excited to publish this effort with the OSPO Alliance,” said Cédric Thomas, CEO of OW2.

The OSPO Alliance is also pleased to welcome eight new supporters, including the Free Software Foundation Europe, SAP, and WiPro.

Quotations From Supporters About Their Participation In the OSPO Alliance:

“APELL (Association Professionnelle Européenne du Logiciel Libre), Europe’s Open Source Business Association, and its national members, are eager to support the mission of the OSPO Alliance. Europe is an open source champion, and there is still massive potential to tap everywhere from large and small software vendors to big open source users, both in the private and public sectors. We see that this partnership will be very important to strengthening not only Europe's but the world's capacity to use and contribute to open source at an even greater scale. Increased understanding of open source governance and the establishment of Open Source Programme Offices hold massive potential to enable open innovation at large in society,” said Timo Väliharju, Founder and board member of APELL.

“The CNLL, the association representing the free software sector in France, has long supported the creation of OSPOs, or "free software missions", in France, at the level of the Government but also at the level of major local authorities, as well as at the European level. The mission of these OSPOs in France should be to make concrete the notion of "encouraging the use of free software" within the administration, as provided for in Article 16 of the Digital Republic Act (or Lemaire Act) of 2016. These OSPOs should network with each other and with organizations representing the industry in order to fully realize the economic and strategic benefits of OSS in Europe,” said Stéfane Fermigier, co-president of CNLL.

“The OSB Alliance – Bundesverband für digitale Souveränität e.V. represents about 170 companies from the Open Source economy. We are committed to sustainably anchoring the central importance of open source software and open standards for a digitally sovereign society in the public consciousness.

“For the OSB Alliance establishing an OSPO is a great strategic approach for public or private organisations to professionalize their engagement with the Open Source Ecosystem. So we see the OSPO Alliance as an exciting new European initiative to support organisations in the public, private or academia sector with information and best practices on OSPOs. Such support can especially accelerate the process of setting up important OSPOs as planned e.g. at EU level or the planned Zendis in Germany,” declared Peter Ganten, Chairman of the OSBA-Board.

“The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) is a charity that empowers users to control technology. Since 2001 the FSFE has been enhancing users' rights by abolishing barriers for software freedom. For 20 years FSFE has been helping individuals and organisations to understand how Free Software contributes to freedom, transparency, and self-determination.

Joining OSPO.Zone is another brick in the wall to ensure that more Free Software is developed and used - be it in the private or governmental sector. Free Software gives everybody the right to use, study, share and improve software. To make sure that these rights are understood and used an OSPO can make a difference,” said Matthias Kirschner, President Free Software Foundation Europe

About the OSPO Alliance:
The OSPO Alliance was established by leading European open source non-profit organisations, including OW2, Eclipse Foundation, OpenForum Europe, and Foundation for Public Code, and experienced practitioners with the aim to grow awareness for open source in Europe and to globally promote structured, responsible and professional management of open source by companies and administrations. OSPO.Zone is the new website for delivering the resources and collaboration envisaged by the OSPO Alliance. Learn more at https://ospo.zone.

OW2 introduces the « Market Readiness Levels », a method for evaluating the business potential of open source projects

OW2  introduces the « Market Readiness Levels », a method for evaluating the business potential of open source projects.

At Open Source Experience, the OW2 Community is proud to present MRL, a method already implemented within the OW2 code base et made available now to the entire open source community.

Paris, France, Novembre 8, 2021 –  OW2, the community promoting open source software for information systems reveals its methodology MRL “Market Readiness Levels”. Evaluating open source projects is a permanent challenge that OW2 has chosen to meet by defining a unique composite indicator. The method is now applied to the projects from the OW2 code base.

This indicator facilitates the evaluation and adoption of open source projects from the point of view of corporate information systems managers, those who are not familiar with open source. For these new users, educated in the commercial practices of proprietary software vendors, open source remains a counter-intuitive model; its technical, legal and community specificities are a source of uncertainty that is not very favourable to positive decisions. Mainstream decision-makers must hear a language they understand. This is the role of the Market Readiness Levels (MRL) method developed by OW2 for evaluating open source projects. With MRL, decision-makers have a familiar indicator that positions open source projects according to the “business” decision criteria they are used to. Open source is moving towards them.

MRL is both a decision support tool for developers, architects and IT decision makers, and a self-assessment tool for project managers. MRL allows them to identify areas for improvement that will increase the potential for adoption of the project by the market. At a more general level, MRL aims to contribute to the professionalization and industrialization of the open source software sector. The method aims to make the projects more "consumable" by the market, and at the same time improves the level of user confidence. Details of the methodology, its three levels of analysis and the hundreds of criteria taken into account will be presented to Open Source Experience (OSXP) during a dedicated session. Five projects from the OW2 code base evaluated by the method will then speak (XWiki, LemonLDAP, BlueMind, Lutece, and OCS Inventory). This feedback and testimonials will illustrate the benefits of MRL for producers of open source technologies. MRL is obviously accessible in open source and freely applicable to other code bases.

Join the MRL presentation at Open Source Experience on November 10 at 10h30, room 243.

OSPO Alliance Celebrates New Supporters Including Red Hat

THE INTERNET, July 27, 2021 - The OSPO Alliance today announced that major international open source contributors, including Red Hat, Microsoft and Orange, have signed up to participate in the Alliance’s activities and in OSPO.Zone. Twelve organisations have signed statements of support for OSPO Alliance since it launched in June. The strength of support confirms the importance of open source software to the European economy and the value of establishing a centre of excellence promoting good open source governance in every organisation.

The OSPO Alliance aims to help companies and public institutions discover and understand open source, start benefiting from it across their activities and grow to host an Open Source Program Office (OSPO). The OSPO Alliance provides an organisation-neutral venue for contributors to share resources, experience and skills. Supporters can opt to contribute at the new OSPO.Zone website and/or contribute to the articulation of the Good Governance Initiative methodology.

Quotations from new supporters

Red Hat

“As Red Hat’s own twenty-eight year history is built upon open collaboration, governance, and code, we’re pleased to join the OSPO Alliance and help foster education for open source participation across > industries. The Alliance embodies the spirit and the practice of open collaboration in a vendor-neutral manner, bringing together open source leaders to help guide organizations looking to embark upon or refresh their open source strategy. Red Hat looks forward to contributing to the OPSO Alliance’s shared knowledge base and strengthening collaboration in good governance practices.” said Deb Bryant, Sr Director, Open Source Program Office, Red Hat

Microsoft

“Open source is a core part of nearly every company’s digital strategy today. Across all of our teams at Microsoft, we collaborate with open source communities to use, contribute to, and release open source software to help organizations achieve more. We’re committed to learning and growing together with the open source ecosystem so we can continue to make open source sustainable for everyone. We have supported and contributed to the OW2 Good Governance initiative from its inception and look forward to continuing to work with the OSPO Alliance to further advance these practices in Europe.” said Stormy Peters, Director, Open Source Programs Office at Microsoft.

Orange

“As a founding member of OW2, Orange has long recognised the importance of open source software. After helping kick start the OW2 Good Governance Initiative, the Orange Group looks forward to working with the OSPO Alliance to help others improve their professional and responsible management of open source.” said Christophe Jelen, head of Open Source Governance for Orange and Julien Dubreuil, head of the OSPO at Orange Business Services.

Engineering Group

“As a global digital services player for more than 40 years we are, with our Knowage division among others, a determined member and contributor to the open source ecosystem. With a strong focus on open source management, we recognise that we can do much more to facilitate adoption by our customers. For this reason we regard the OSPO Alliance as an exciting new European initiative for us to get involved in, strengthening our historic collaboration with OW2, Eclipse and the other open source major actors.” said Orazio Viele, CTO & Research and Innovation Director at Engineering Group.

OpenUK

“OpenUK recognises the importance of Open Source Program Offices in ensuring good governance and managing security of sustainable open source software and so is collaborating with the OSPO Alliance, to support the UK’s evolution of OSPO’s. OpenUK’s 2021 Report established the UK as the number one contributor to open source software in Europe with up to £43.1bn being contributed to annual GDP in the UK economy. There has never been a more important time for the UK to support the evolution of its open source contribution and usage than today in a post Brexit Global Britain, focusing on good local practices to allow collaboration with our open source colleagues globally.” said Amanda Brock, CEO, OpenUK.

Quotations from Founders

OpenForum Europe

“OpenForum Europe is proud to be a founding supporter of the OSPO Alliance to help strengthen the institutional capacity of global open source. Well-run Open Source Programme Offices hold massive potential to enable open innovation in society at large. This goes for private companies, be it small or large software vendors or digitising industrial companies, as well as the public sector and academia. We see the OSPO Alliance as an important forum to realise the potential of the OSPO construct as a fundamental building block and networking interface in the global institutional infrastructure of open source across sectors.” said Sachiko Muto, CEO, OpenForum Europe.

Foundation for Public Code

We’re proud to be a co-founder of the OSPO Alliance, a valuable resource for knowledge sharing and open collaboration. Public sector digital transformation requires strong operational mechanisms to connect public administrations to the open source ecosystem. The ability for these organizations to learn from each other, industry and academia is essential for adopting open source in the public sector. We’re confident that the OSPO Alliance will make implementing open source in the public sector more practical and achievable.” said Boris van Hoytema, Chief Executive, Foundation for Public Code.
