[OW2 Newsletter - November 2019 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

In what is undoubtably one of its most ambitious initiatives in the field yet, on November 14-15 the European Commission’s DG CONNECT is holding a workshop on the future of Open Source Software and Open Source Hardware. The Commission has also launched a call for a study on "The Impact of Open Source Software and Hardware on Technological Independence, Competitiveness and Innovation in the EU Economy". The EC appears to be beginning to take open source seriously. The opening panel of the workshop, on which I have been invited to speak, explores the role of open source as innovation enabler. This is actually a good, and urgent, question. Given the structure of the global software industry, conventional proprietary IP regimes will not help. It is only by leveraging open source that European software innovations have any hope of success.

On another note, we are pleased to introduce new OW2 Associate Organization: Foundation for Public Code. As already announced, OW2con’20 will take place on June 17-18. The Call for Presentations will open shortly. Stay tuned!

Thank you for your on-going support.

Cedric Thomas
