February 2023 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - February 2023 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

Time goes by, late tonight writing this newsletter, then wondering... what if I let ChatGPT do it instead of me?

Ok, just a joke! It's me!

And at OW2 we believe social economy will take over our IT destiny, not AI bots. I use the term in its broadest sense: societal innovation means cooperation between businesses, public bodies, and the society at large, to provide a mix of open source, open science and open education everyone benefits from.

We are part of that game for a long time, with recent successes:
- In France, our report on the impact of free software installability on the durability of devices (in French) led the Government's digital agency state that free software is key for durability, and envisage to include it in a "durability index" displayed on smartphones and computers.
- In the EU, the NGI Search project we are part of just closed its 1st open call, and many applicants are keen on social impact and open source, involving civil associations, companies and research institutes with long track records in open models. Let's wish these ones good luck!

Of course, the path is narrow, as foundations like us are digital commons: those who benefit from them and contribute or finance are fair, but unfair use can't be avoided without enclosures - what economists call the "tragedy of the commons" - and we don't want that.
I just had a talk (along with Python software foundation CEO Deb Nicholson) at the Board of Apereo, a US foundation focused on OSS for Universities, exchanging about governance and ways to gain sustainability and secure financing: all of us face the same dilemma and issues, and if hard times are expected in such a changing world we have to struggle together.

So, as a start to join the play, just come and meet us at OW2Con'23 (June 14/15 in Paris): it is about digital commons, the CFP is open, the event is free, we have great keynoters we'll unveil soon, and there are motivating sponsor packages accessible to everyone.

This makes lots of good reasons for me to keep writing this, not a cyborg: let's bet on collective human intelligence!

Thanking you for your on-going support,

Pierre-Yves Gibello
