December 2020 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - December 2020 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

Last month, the European Commission published the 2020-2023 update of its open source software strategy announcing it is to set up an Open Source Programme Office (OSPO). The concept is promoted by the Linux Foundation’s TODO group which has produced impressive material on how to run open source projects and programs. The group members being essentially prominent information technology vendors and platforms (mostly US), putting their houses in order with regard to how they resort to open source software is the least they can do.

However, for non IT companies, despite the hype, the OSPO concept is still rather empty and this is were OW2’s OSS Good Governance initiative comes in. We want to provide a blueprint for all open source users in the European ecosystem, whether in the IT industry or not. Our ambition is to provide guidelines for public administrations, utilities, and companies in the manufacturing, transportation, retail, finance sectors etc. to use open source software with the same level of proficiency as the Googles and Microsofts of this world.

On another note, we are pleased to welcome a new project in incubation in our code base: ENACT-Genesys submitted by our Norwegian member SINTEF. Heads up, this month we are opening the OW2con’21 Call for Presentations, check it out!

Thank you for your support, stay safe and… Season's greetings to all!

Cedric Thomas
