OW2 Software in Action

Slides of the presentations are available on the main program page.

Schedule: Thursday 25, 2010 - 2:00pm - 05:00pm.
Session Chair: Thierry Humbert, EdifiXio.

1. Secure your Java EE project with the performance diagnostic tool provided by OW2 JOnAS.

Schedule:02:00pm- 02:30pm
Speaker: Florent Benoit(Bull).
Abstract: With the advent of the SOA and Cloud paradigms, the applications are more and more complex and distributed in the Enterprise Information System. They are generally built as an assembly of numerous components developed specifically for the application needs or retrieved from third parties or Open Source communities.
This new way to design applications has many advantages and permits to reduce drastically the development time. However there're also some drawbacks. In particular, when some performance issues occur, it's quite difficult to identify which component is responsible and can be improved.
The OW2 JOnAS application server tackles this problem with a new feature named 'audit' enabling to discover the architecture of the application through a graph console and enabling to identify the hotspot in the components call tree. Currently, the tool supports servlets and EJBs components and is able to follow both the synchronous and asynchronous requests. The WebServices and OSGi support are forecasted soon. This session will present the principles and a demo.

2. Presto (French web service protocol for public administrations exchanges) : an open-source implementation.

Schedule: 2:30pm - 03:00pm
Speaker:Pierre-Yves Gibello (Research Engineer, PetalsLink).
Abstract: Presto (French web service protocol for public administrations exchanges) : an open-source implementation.
Presto is an open interoperability standard, based on Web Services. It is intended for exchanges between french public administrations and their public or private counterparts. Presto is a kind of WS-I profile : it mainly involves WS-Addressing and WS-ReliableMessaging.
The Presto specifications are lead by DGME (« Direction Générale de la Modernisation de l'Etat », a public body that promotes innovation and new paradigms to adapt public services to modern life). Several software developers already provide Presto stacks : DGME conducts an « interoperability lab », with milestones for Presto providers to demonstrate interoperability; PetalsLink is one of these providers (the only one with a full OSS stack), along with Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Tibco and Axway.
ADULLACT (a french association, kind of « lobby » that promotes free software in the public sector) hosts an OSS Presto kit, based on Apache Axis2 + Sandesha projects.
PetalsLink has a 2-folded strategy wrt Presto :
Provide a Petals presto connector (a JBI binding component), based on the ADULLACT kit, to make Presto available in an ESB / SOA context.Contribute to the ADULLACT kit itself (we are committers on the project) and keep it independent from our solution, to make Presto widely accessible.
This talk will detail what Presto is, what are the roles of involved actors (DGME, Adullact, software providers, system integrators...), and the perspectives for an OSS presto stack.
It will explain how the ADULLACT Presto kit can be used and embedded in a custom solution to support Presto, and how Petals can help doing that in the context of an ESB / SOA platform.

3. Salome-TMF a Test Management tool that connects the tests team to those of development.

Schedule:03:00pm - 03:30pm
Speaker:  Véronique Théault (Acpqualife Salome - TMF).
Abstract: The talk will give as an introduction the history of Salome's project development. How the collaborative work and the relay between the contributors from the OW2 community has participated to the project development? How is the project positioned today in the development life cycle?. The second part of the presentation will focus on Salome's main features, i.e Requirements / Test Plan / Campaigns / Defects, and Data Environments. The connection with other project management tools (Redmine, Jira) and with scripting tools Java, Junit, Selenium, Eclipse will be explained as well as the next steps of project  development, focusing on Salome’s adaptation for testing agiles’ projects.
The end of presentation will be based on use cases, showing three examples of Salome's concrete deployments:
- Jedeclare project, Salome at the heart of the development team
- Use in integration testing of electronic payments solutions

Break: 03:30pm - 04:00pm

4. Configuration from clustering to WAN distribution with Joram

Schedule: 04:00pm - 04:30pm
Speaker:  Serge Lacourte, ScalAgent.
Abstract: Joram implements a basic message oriented middleware (MOM) conforming to the JMS and now AMQP standards. As such it may be used in a very large range of applications, and its ability to configure specifically for each context proves to be a key asset of Joram. We present in this talk two use cases of Joram in very different applications, from clustering to WAN distribution.
The JMS standard appeared as part of the J2EE standard, primarily focused on Web applications. Traditional application architectures in this context are three tiered, with clustering at all stages. The french car certificates management application follows this example, and we will show how Joram helps building a clustered application.
MOMs may also be used standalone in less friendly network environments. Initially designed to architecture interactions between multiple back office applications, MOMs enable communications between remote facilities without enforcing too much constraints on the communication layer. The french air force communication management application is a perfect example where the communication layer itself brings major structuring constraints on the application, part of them being handled by Joram.

5. Transforming the Data Center.

Schedule: 04:30pm - 05:00pm
Speaker:Giulio Toffoli.
Abstract: The boundless proliferation of data seems never-ending, based on a sea change of technical, economic, and social factors. New computing methodologies such as the cloud-as-infrastructure, web-powered social software, and the principles of open source design/development/distribution have created massive opportunities and challenges for businesses to get smarter about themselves and their customers.  Organizations now must derive new value harnessed from the social web, and must do so with tools that are orders of magnitude more powerful, less costly, and easier to use than those of even just a few years ago.  For many years, organizations have used business intelligence tools to gain strategic insight into their own structured operational data.  Now, a new data landscape has emerged which requires new tools that can embrace the explosion of externally-generated data (much of which is web-based) with existing corporate IT data sources and systems.  This new combination of corporate data with a wide variety of web-generated content is enabling a new breed of mash-up business intelligence applications that deliver superior insight about customers, competitors, suppliers, processes and more.
Jaspersoft has joined OW2 as a corporate member in 2010 and is today involved in both leading OW2 initiatives: Business Intelligence and Open Source Cloudware.
Giulio Toffoli will discuss how next-generation business intelligence software is transforming the corporate datacenter and its developers through scalable, contextually-relevant, pervasive, and open software. He'll cover how open source business intelligence software is driving a strategic, analytic agenda, creating progressive and even transformative IT organizations along the way, as well as the roadmap for Business Intelligence in the OW2 BI and Open Source Cloudware initiatives.
