Initiative Overview

Initiatives are joint efforts by OW2 Members aimed at facilitating the use of OW2 technologies by mainstream Systems Integrators, End-Users and Software Vendors. Within an Initiative, OW2 Members work together to develop both technical integration between projects and business synergies in order to address specific market needs.

The technical outcome of an Initiative is not a product but a high-level environment integrating several projects and providing a complex set of functionalities upon which Systems Integrators, End-Users and Software Vendors can build their own business solutions. The business outcome of an Initiative is a set of core relationships between technology providers, integrators and users. Together, they provide the expertise to implement solutions built upon OW2 technologies.

As the name indicates, Initiatives are bottom-up community efforts that are lead by a Strategic Member. For more information, please read the Initiative Handbook and, if you want to propose an Initiative, use the Initiative Charter Template.

The current Initiatives are: the Big Data Initiative, the Open Source Cloudware Initiative, the Future Internet Initiative, the Accessibility Initiative (OSAi), the OSS in Big Cities and the Security Initiative.

miniAPP

The MiniApp initiative (abbreviated simply to "MAI") is focused on MiniApps, a new platform for building light hybrid applications that do not require installation and so enable a near-instant "see-acquire-use" app dynamic for users. MiniApps can deliver a comparable experience to native apps but with less development code and less acquisition friction.

The OSS Good Governance initiative

Most large end-users and systems integrators already use FOSS either in their information systems or in their product and service divisions. Open source compliance has become an ever growing concern and many large companies have named compliance officers. However, compliance is only one part of open source governance. We see open source governance encompassing the whole ecosystem, engaging with local communities, nurturing a healthy relationship with open source software vendors and service specialists. This is what OSS good governance is about. A neutral, open ground for executives concerned with defining and steering their open source strategies, it will allow them to share their experiences, difficulties and uncertainties, but also successes and best practices.

Open Source Accessibility Initiative

This community-driven initiative hosted by OW2 is designed to develop open source technologies and share best practices in the field of accessibility.

OSAi contributes to build synergies between OW2 members and the larger community around open and compliant digital solutions for people with physical or cognitive difficulties. The initiative seeks to facilitate technology integration between open source accessibility enablement and management software. It provides a neutral forum to identify, discuss, develop and integrate quality open source solutions for accessibility. The OSAi initiative has been announced at OSCON, May 17, 2016 (Press Release).

Big Data Initiative

The OW2 Big Data initiative aims at attracting a vibrant ecosystem around open source Big Data and Business Intelligence technologies, also focusing on Open Data as a primary source of information. The initiative opens new challenges and opportunities to companies, organizations, technology stakeholders, consultants and end-users to obtain competitive advantage, exploiting opportunities provided by an open approach, including the adoption of OW2 open source code base.
The OW2 Big Data initiative is the evolution of the former OW2 BI Initiative

Future Internet Initiative

The Future Internet Software and Services initiative (FISSi) is a joint effort by OW2 and non-OW2 members promote technologies for the development and run-time of ultra-large scale service-oriented solutions for the Future Internet. FISSi publishes open source code freely available from the OW2 code base. FISSi leverages the technology developed by CHOReOS, a three years EU-funded R&D project that provides the technical platform to build context-aware, scalable applications for the Future Internet. FISSi is compliant with key standards implemented by the CHOReOS platform such as OMG/BPMN 2.0 and OMG/SoaML. CHOReVOLUTION, an Horizon 2020 Project funded by the European Commission, adds a development Studio to provide automated synthesis of dynamic and secured choreographies to existing choreography technologies.

Open Source Cloudware Initiative

The OW2 Open Source Cloudware Initiative (OSC Initiative) is a unique community effort aimed at providing and promoting an integrated portfolio of open source software components for cloud computing. The OSC Initiative is geared to be a broadscale community project combining best of breed open source technologies for the Cloud. It will foster cloudware for interoperability at the IaaS level and for open and customizable PaaS and SaaS architecture solutions. The Initiative will develop interfaces and partnerships with major research projects, such as SelfXL, CompatibleOne, and 4Caast, and leading existing open source cloud technologies outside OW2. The initiative will also closely follow emerging cloud computing standards.

OSS in Big Cities Initiative

OSS in Big Cities is materialized by countless dedicated open source business applications. Dedicated applications are implemented by in-house IT teams and specialized systems integrators. The problem is that, beyond their functional scope, the open source experience developed by these projects seem to have little or no echo at the CIO level. Consequently, OSS is only rarely a central concern nor a recommended best practice. The objective of the OSS in Big Cities initiative is to leverage real life OSS applications to help build strategic awareness at the next level including CIO/CDO, Political stakeholders and Architects/Consultants.

Call for Participation: As the name indicates, we invite Big Cities to participate. Why not just “Cities”? Well, we think Big Cities are different. They have a complex information systems run by in-house IT teams, they support multiple technology generations; they look at implementing smart-city applications, their decision process is complex, they are submitted to the pressure of proprietary vendors. In a word, their information systems are unique and they follow long-term strategic IT plans that may consider open source software as a key component. Feel free to use the contact below.

Privacy and Security Initiative

Within the OW2 Privacy and Security Initiative, OW2 members and non-OW2 members are joining their efforts to develop and to promote open-source code and documentation about data integrity, data privacy and Cloud/IT security. These software, such as LemonLDAP::NG, are based on open standards and freely available on the OW2 code base. Here are the first market segments that the OW2 initiative is currently investigating:

  • IAM (Identity and access management), federated IAM, identity in the Cloud
  • SIEM (Security Information and Events Management)
  • Securing Clouds
  • Security Software as a Service (SaaS)
