La conférence OW2con'24 aborde les financements et nouveaux défis réglementaires pour les logiciels libres

Avec quatre discours inauguraux, quatre sessions en petits groupes et 30 présentations d'experts, la conférence annuelle d’OW2 traite les aspects techniques, éthiques et juridiques de l’open source à Paris, les 11-12 juin.

Paris, le 2 mai 2024 - OW2, la communauté internationale des logiciels libres professionnels offre d'excellentes opportunités de réseautage aux contributeurs et aux utilisateurs de logiciels open source, les 11 et 12 juin 2024 à Orange Gardens à Paris-Châtillon.

La 15ème édition d'OW2con rassemble des développeurs, entreprises, universitaires et organisations à but non lucratif. La conférence accueille également la Tunisie en tant que pays invité et met en lumière trois projets OW2 en leur décernant un prix OW2con'24 Best Project Awards distinguant des réussites dans plusieurs domaines : technologies, marché, communauté. L’édition 2024 est soutenue par de 12 sponsors proches d’OW2 : Collabora Online, Huawei, Orange, Worteks, la Ville de Paris, Rocket.chat, Xwiki, OnlyOffice, la MAIF, NGI Search, NGI Zero Commons, et OpenUp. 

Durant deux jours, plus de 200 développeurs internationaux auront l'occasion de discuter avec quelques dizaines d'intervenants, partenaires et membres de la communauté. Le thème central de cette édition est "Le financement des logiciels libres". Tous les participants pourront découvrir les appels à propositions en cours des fonds européens NGI Search et NGI Zero Commons.

D'autres témoignages et débats aborderont les dernières tendances technologiques et sociales, y compris l'avenir de l'open source. Par ailleurs, les nouvelles réglementations (CRA, AI Act), et systèmes de standards européens seront discutés lors d'une table ronde animée par Simon Phipps de l'OSI, ainsi que dans diverses conférences. Cette année, les orateurs "keynote" de renommée mondiale sont :

OW2con’24 Addresses Open Source Software Funding and New Regulatory Challenges

With four keynotes, four breakout sessions, 30 talks from international experts, the OW2 community's annual conference addresses the main technical, business, ethical and legal issues in Paris, 11-12 June. 

Paris,  2 May 2024 - OW2, the international community of professional open source software is offering excellent networking opportunities to open source contributors and users, next June 11-12, 2024 at Orange Gardens in Paris-Châtillon.

The 15th edition of OW2con is bringing together developers, companies, academics and non-profit organizations. The conference will also welcome Tunisia as Invited Country and highlight three OW2 projects as Community, Market, and Technology OW2con’24 Best Project Awards. An event made possible thanks to 12 open source sponsors: Collabora Online, Huawei, Orange, Worteks, City of Paris, Rocket.chat, Xwiki, OnlyOffice, MAIF, NGI Search, NGI Zero Commons, and OpenUp. 

During both days, more than 200 international developers will have a chance to discuss with several dozens of speakers, partners and members of the community. The central theme of this edition is “Funding Open Source Software and Digital Commons". All participants will be able to find out more about the current NGI Search and NGI Zero Commons Fund EU funding open calls.

More testimonials and debates will address recent technology and social trends, including the future of open source. In addition, the new european regulations (CRA, AI Act) and standards system will be discussed in a round table moderated by Simon Phipps from the OSI. This year world-class keynote speakers are:

Unprecedented contribution from the European Commission to the future internet

Fuel your project with NGI Zero Commons Fund :
European funding for open source software and open models with social impact, open to all

Paris, France - January 10, 2024 – OW2, the international community for professional open source software, introduces NGI Zero Commons Fund (NGI0 Commons), a new project from the Horizon Europe Next Generation Internet initiative.

Since 2018, NGI provides support through a cascade funding mechanism to projects from researchers, startups, SMEs, communities and independent developers, to help build the Internet that responds to people’s fundamental needs, including trust, security, and inclusion. NGI follows a bottom-up approach, supporting the builders directly by operating at the fine-grained scale of human talent, and opening the calls to individuals.

NGI0 Commons Fund is NGI’s vehicle for the next 3 years: it aims at funding the future of a European internet based on technology commons, through the development of shared building blocks that enable people to control their digital lives, respect their privacy, and create a fair, innovative economy. NGI0 vision is to help restore public ownership of the internet, making it healthier and more open – both as infrastructure and as ecosystem.

The program is steered by NLnet, and includes many European foundations (OW2 for the community, FSFE, the Internet Society and the Association for Progressive Communications for free and neutral projects, Open Forum Europe for policy and society, the Free Silicon Foundation for open hardware, APELL for the business world), as well as committed open source players (such as NixOS, Tolerant Networks, Radically Open Security, Commons Caretakers, Center for the Cultivation of Technology, and academics (HAN Arnhem University).

The project will receive a grant of EUR 27 million from the European Commission, 80% of it being redistributed across continuous open calls, with no less than 300 projects expected to be funded. The first open call starts on February 1st, 2024, and applying is as simple as filling a form!

The OW2 community steps up its presence at Open Source Experience Paris 2023

The OW2 open source community is very active at OSXP this month, with 12 booths staffed by OW2 members, including 4 in the OW2 Village, and several conference presentations.

Paris, December 6, 2023 - OW2, the community promoting professional open source software, announces its presence at Open Source Experience 2023, to be held at the Palais des Congrès in Paris on December 6 and 7, 2023.

On the show floor, the OW2 community booth (#H24) reveals the projects of three association members and those of two initiatives:

• Xwiki presents the latest news on its eponymous knowledge management platform, and Cryptpad, the end-to-end encrypted open source collaborative suite. 

• WAARP unveils its secure file-sharing solutions.

• The City of Paris demonstrates its Lutèce open source portal, designed to rapidly create a dynamic website or application, and the CitéLibre framework for local authorities. 

• The Horizon Europe NGI Search cascade funding project specifies the next two calls for projects aimed at developers of open source software improving methods and mechanisms for searching and discovering data on the Internet. University researchers, innovative start-ups and SMEs can benefit from financial, scientific and marketing support. 

• The OSPO Alliance's Good Open Source Governance (GGI) initiative outlines its methodological framework to help organizations structure their use of open source software through an open source strategy team, the OSPO (open source program office).

Other OW2 members welcome visitors at their own booths: BlueMind, Centreon, FactorFX, Huawei (with a MiniApp programming contest), Inria, Linphone, Microsoft, Smile and Worteks.

Parution du nouveau livre blanc d’OpenStudio avec le concours d’OW2, à l’occasion du salon Open Source Experience des 6 & 7 décembre 2023 au Palais des congrès de Paris

Paris, France, le 16 novembre 2023 – OpenStudio, entreprise de services numériques spécialisée dans l’open source et OW2, la communauté de promotion des logiciels open source pour les professionnels annoncent la parution du livre blanc OpenSource et Logiciels Libres : perspectives et visions des acteurs de l’OpenSource le 6 décembre 2023 lors d’Open Source Experience.

Paradoxalement, l’open source est un modèle à la fois très implanté dans l’écosystème numérique et en même temps très mal connu ou qui apparaît compliqué aux yeux du grand public. OpenStudio, entreprise de services numériques investie dans l’open source et membre d’OW2 depuis 2023, a souhaité contribuer à sa manière, en publiant un livre blanc dont la vocation est de croiser les regards entre différents acteurs de l’open source, intitulé OpenSource et Logiciels Libres : perspectives et visions des acteurs de l’OpenSource.

Les arguments et les nombreux témoignages de ce livre blanc - complémentaire aux autres ouvrages de qualité sur le sujet - visent à éclairer les raisons d’un potentiel développement important de l’open source dans les prochaines décennies tout en soulignant les freins qui restent à lever pour que ce modèle soit davantage plébiscité par les acteurs économiques, privés, publics ou associatifs.

New release Open Source Good Governance handbook

At EclipseCon in Ludwigsburg, members of the OSPO Alliance announce release of GGI V1.2, getting a step further in the support provided for the governance of FOSS within organizations. 

Ludwigsburg, October 18, 2023 – The members of the OSPO Alliance are proud to announce the availability of version 1.2 of the Good Governance Initiative (GGI) Handbook. One year after the second version of the handbook, significant progres has been achieved, providing a more sophisticated and accurate support to organizations of all types in their move to establish OSPOs (Open Source Program Offices). 

The release V1.2 includes updates and improvements on the following topics:

• Relationships: to maximise the value of inter-dependencies or optimal sequence of activities, we added links to related activities, where possible.
• InnerSource: addition of a new chapter about the use of open source principles and practices for software development within the confines of an organisation. Many companies deploy such an approach as they recognise the benefits of Open Source. Some GGI activities are particularly relevant in such a context.
• My GGI Board (GitLab board and website to monitor OSPO implementation): easier deployment and improved reporting on activity progress with new diagrams.

"The improvements in this new version of the manual are intentionally very specific and pragmatic" says Boris Baldassari, chairperson of the OSPO Alliance. "With this update, we're answering some very practical questions: where to start, what activities to prioritise, how to monitor and communicate about the implementation of my OSPO? And the fact that we're available in 6 languages makes it even easier to embrace Open Source."

"The GGI was of major help when we implemented the Paris City OSPO and its associated roadmap," adds Philippe Bareille, Open Source Office at Paris City. "This new version benefits as much from our experience as we have benefited from feedback from other players in the community".

In parallel of the availability of v1.2,  a huge translation effort was done recently, making the handbook available in six languages (see the related Press Release). GGI is presented publicly this week at EclipseCon, and will be visible afterwards in some major open source conferences, in Italy (SFScon, Bolzano, November 10-11) and in Paris (Open Source Experience, Paris, December 6-7).  The OnRamp monthly meeting series is another opportunity to discover OSPO Alliance and GGI, the existing tools and methods, and real-life OSPO stories. The November 17th OnRamp meeting, at 10:30 CET, Boris Baldassari will cover in details the new additions to this version.

The “Open Source Good Governance” handbook now available in six languages!

Thanks to the collaborative effort from the open source community, the OSPO Alliance GGI Handbook is today’s most translated document to help organisations building OSPOs. 

Paris, October 2, 2023 – The members of the OSPO Alliance are proud to announce the availability of the Good Governance Initiative Handbook in six languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese). With this major achievement, the handbook reaches out a potential of thousands of readers (472 millions of persons are speaking one of the translated languages, including the Brazilians).
The GGI methodology to help implement corporate-wide open source policies, and set up an OSPO “Open Source Program Office”, can now be easily exported and used worldwide. 

Thanks to the open translation process applied, a large number of contributors has already been involved and this number is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Based on the open source collaborative management tool Weblate, this process enables translators to benefit from an easy to use interface and tight version control integration, along with quality checks. Other languages will come in the future, including Chinese which has been started.

In parallel of translations, other developments are happening such as the improvement of the implementation methodology, with the GGI Automated Deployment feature. New governance rules allow today to manage the initiative as an open source project. Several Task Forces are also meeting regularly and addressing specific topics, such as the metrics integrated to measure successes at each step, or the integration of InnerSource in the methodology. 

The OnRamp monthly meeting series is a unique communication channel set up to give more visibility about the existing tools and methods, the best practices, but also to showcase testimonies and real-life OSPO stories. Join the next online OnRamp meeting, October 20 at 10:30 CEST, where Anne-Marie Scott, Apereo Foundation, will talk about OSPO in the Academic World. 

The GGI methodology will be soon presented publicly in some major open source conferences, in Italy (RIOS Open Source Week, October 3-5 in Roma and SFScon, Bolzano, November 10-11) and in Germany (EclipseCon, October 16-19, in Ludwisburg).

Trois projets open source reçoivent un prix lors de la conférence OW2con’23

ASM, BlueMind et OCS Inventory sont récompensés respectivement dans les catégories technologie, marché et communauté.

Paris, le 14 juin 2023 - OW2, la communauté internationale de logiciels open source pour les systèmes d’information annonce ce jour, à l’occasion de sa conférence annuelle, les trois lauréats des prix OW2con'23 Best Project Awards. Ces prix récompensent des projets OW2 pour leur contribution exceptionnelle en termes de technologie, de communauté et de performance sur le marché. Cette année, les trois vainqueurs sont :

Prix de la technologie : ASM
Le prix OW2con'23 Best Project Technology Award est remis à ASM, un framework d'analyse et de manipulation de code Java qui a maintenu avec succès une forte dynamique d'innovation constante, reflétée dans ASM 9.5, sa version du printemps 2023 comprenant des mises à jour pour Java 21. Soutenue par OW2 depuis 2002, la bibliothèque d'ingénierie logicielle a atteint le niveau respectable de maturité pour le marché (MRL) de 6. Elle a été conçue par Eric Bruneton lors de son doctorat à l’INRIA.

Prix du marché : BlueMind
Le prix OW2con'23 Best Project Market Award revient à BlueMind, une plateforme open source de messagerie, de collaboration et d’agenda, bénéficiant d’une communauté fidèle de contributeurs, et d’une forte base installée qui apprécie ses fonctions de communication et sa place de marché croissante. BlueMind se synchronise avec l’annuaire LDAP, gère les terminaux mobiles, les clients webmail et Thunderbird. OW2 Announces Three OW2con’23 Best Project Awards

ASM, BlueMind and OCS Inventory win technology, market, and community awards, respectively.

Paris, June 14, 2023 - OW2, the international community of open source software for information systems announces, today at OW2con’23, the winners of OW2con'23 Best Project Awards. These awards recognize OW2 projects for their outstanding contribution in technology, community, and market performance. This year, the three winners of the OW2con'23 Best Project Awards are:

Technology Award: ASM
The OW2con'23 Best Project Technology Award goes to ASM, an all purpose Java bytecode manipulation and analysis framework that has successfully maintained a strong momentum of constant innovation well reflected in ASM 9.5, released in spring 2023 and including updates for Java 21. Supported by OW2 since 2002, the engineering library has reached a respectable Market Readiness Level of 6. It was created by Eric Bruneton during its PhD at INRIA.

Market Award: BlueMind
The OW2con’23 Best Project Market Award goes to BlueMind, an open source messaging, agenda and collaboration platform, with a loyal community of contributors, a strong user base appreciating its communication features and a growing marketplace. BlueMind supports LDAP directory synchronisation, mobile devices, webmail and Thunderbird clients. Moreover, videoconferencing features, Active Directory and Outlook connectors are available through subscriptions, making this platform a sovereign alternative to Microsoft Online Exchange and Google Workspace, notably for European organisations.

Community Award: OCS Inventory
The OW2con’23 Best Project Community Award goes to OCS Inventory, an open source computer and software asset management system integrating a software deployment solution. With an excellent Market Readiness Level of 8 and the French Gendarmerie actively involved in its development, OCS Inventory is aligned with multiple public and private organisation expectations. It meets IT support needs through its central management server, its compliance with the Snmp protocol, and useful reporting features to manage PC and connected device fleets of all sizes.
