October 2012 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - October 2012 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

For the fifth year running, OW2 is organizing the Community Summit at the Open World Forum held in Paris from October 11 to 13. Free and open source software community practitioners will be debating this year on the changes to the roles and functioning of such communities engendered by the emergence of cloud computing.

Whereas IT freedom used to be broadly defined in terms of software accessibility, we all know that in the age of cloud computing, what customers get is a service, not software. With cloud computing, software is hosted and vendors do not distribute it. Since the code is no longer circulating, improvements to the software are no longer shared. IT freedom must now be defined in terms of service accessibility and data freedom. What is free service exactly? Is open data the new open source? Is cloud computing a paradigm shift that makes open source claims irrelevant? What do “open” and “free” mean in the age of cloud computing? What new challenges are posed to free and open source software communities? Fascinating questions!

October is also the month of the China Open Source Week (COSW - see the announcment) which is spearheaded by OW2. The event (October 15-20, Nanjing, Beijing) is a forum where open source users, activists, academics, executives, professionals, luminaries and vendors can merge their experiences to build awareness for open source in China as much as a business model as a credible way to develop, use and distribute software.

On another note, we are pleased to welcome Peergreen, the start-up recently launched to edit the OW2 JOnAS application server. And we are also welcoming two new members to the OW2 Management Office: Olivier Bouzereau, who some of you already know, joins OW2 as our Community Coordinator and Jialin Ma, who will reinforce the OW2 China Local Chapter.

Thank you for your contributions and on-going support,

Cedric Thomas

PS: Project leaders: Do not forget to use the OW2 Forge to tell everybody about your project updates. News will appear on the OW2 forge, our home page and in this newsletter
