July 2011 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - July 2011 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

We have some exciting events coming up: the Bay Area OW2 Meetup (July 21), the OW2 Programming Contest, the China Open Source Week (October 12-17) and the OW2con (November 23-24). Make sure you save the dates and check out our sponsoring packages.

These events are important for OW2 community as they help our community OW2 fulfill its role in the open source software industry. Please support them!

The proprietary software industry is structured by its leaders - companies with formidable marketing power capable of launching global campaigns resembling rock star tours. Now look at the open source software industry. There are no such powerhouses. We see small and medium size innovative companies, development teams in conventional IT companies barely accepted by proprietary-minded management, academic teams at universities and research institutes, projects supported by users who have no plans to market their software, individuals who work on a project for the fun, or out of interest and so on.

Organizations such as OW2 provide the backbone and the coordination mechanisms to turn this group of small, powerless entities into a real industry capable of changing the course of software. Indeed, open source organizations fulfill a role traditionnally assumed, in the proprietary software industry, by global market leaders driven by they own interests. And this is why OW2 is essential and why our community must be global.

Thanking you for your on-going support,

Cedric Thomas

PS: Project leaders: Do not forget to use the OW2 Forge to tell everybody about your project updates. News will appear on the OW2 forge, our home page and in this newsletter
