August 2015 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - August 2015 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

It is hard to find a company in the digital industry or indeed in any other that does not use open source software. Even businesses claiming to prefer the managerial comfort of dealing with proprietary vendors have to recognize they deploy open source software. The question is no longer whether companies use it or not, but more how they do it.

Some are just opportunists who integrate OSS with no strategy while others claim to be long-term open source fans but, in fact, remain mere consumers because they do no more than follow decisions made by development teams over which they have no influence. And then there are those companies that actively participate or support the active participation of their employees in open source communities and projects. These are the organizations that achieve the most benefits from OSS, are the most attractive to talented developers, and are the most agile and innovative in their use of technologies. So, are you a consumer or a participant?

I am pleased to welcome our new member, OpenIO, a young start-up which develops, markets and supports a cutting edge open source technology in ultra-scalable object storage software.

Sponsoring opportunities! Calling sponsors to make both OW2con'15 and the Programming Contest a success for our communities. Check out the OW2con'15 sponsorship proposal here and sponsoring opportunities at the OW2 programming contest award conference here. These events are important for the OW2 community as they help us fulfill our role in the open source software industry. Please support them!

Thank you for your on-going support and for those of you in the northern hemisphere, enjoy your summer break!

Cedric Thomas
