August 2013 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - August 2013 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

Back when only computers were connected to the Internet, the focus of open source cooperation was exclusively on software. Now that all sorts of objects, devices and things are set to become connected, the focus of open source activism is increasingly encompassing hardware. This trend, already apparent in our highly successful session on open hardware at China Open Source Week 2011, is now confirmed by the growing number of talks on hardware at mainstream open source conferences such as OSCON and Open World Forum. Interest in hardware is accompanied by the growing popularity and influence of functional languages such as Erlang, Clojure and Scala. This doesn't mean that good old Java and Python are on the way out since they appear to have become the languages of choice in Cloud Computing and Software Defined Networking, the main defining trends at present in our industry. The foundations of the IT world shaping up for the years to come will call for the best in middleware. At OW2 we are prepared, we are well positioned, and we know how to support large complex collaborative projects.

Before shifting into summer mode and taking turns to go on well-deserved holidays, the OW2 Management Office has been busy preparing for a number of top-line autumn events including Cloud Interoperability WeekOpen World Forum, the OW2 Programming Contest and OW2con'13. See details below.

Thank you for your on-going support and for those of you in the northern hemisphere, enjoy your summer break!

Cedric Thomas
