InitiativesInitiatives are joint efforts by OW2 Members aiming at facilitating the use of OW2 technologies by mainstream Systems Integrators, End-Users and Software Vendors. Within an Initiative, OW2 Members work together to develop both technical integration between projects and business synergies in order to address specific market needs. The technical outcome of an Initiative is not a product but a high-level environment integrating several projects and providing a complex set of functionnalities upon which Systems Integrators, End-Users and Software Vendors can build their own business solutions. The business outcome of an Initiative is a set of core relationship between technology providers, integrators and users. Together, they provide the expertise to implement solutions built upon OW2 technologies. As the names indicates, Initiatives are bottom-up community initiatives, they are lead by a Strategic Member. For more information, please read the Initiative Handbook and, if you want to propose an Initiative, use the Initiative Charter Template. There is currently one Initiative in Operational status: the Business Intelligence (BI) Initiative The OW2 community is currently working on developing new Initiatives including:
Open Source Cloudware InitiativeThe OW2 Open Source Cloudware Initiative (OSC Initiative) is a unique community effort aimed at providing and promoting an integrated portfolio of open source software components for cloud computing. The OSC Initiative is geared to be a broadscale community project combining best of breed open source technologies for the Cloud. It will foster cloudware for interoperability at the IaaS level and for open and customizable PaaS and SaaS architecture solutions. The Initiative will develop interfaces and partnerships with major research projects, such as SelfXL, Compatible One, and 4Caast, and leading existing open source cloud technologies outside OW2; it will also closely follow emerging cloud computing standards.
Status: Incubation (pending approval for operational by Board decision on next Board meeting on May 19, 2010).

BI InitiativeThe goal of the OW BI Initiative is to foster the growth of a business ecosystem in the Business Intelligence domain bringing business opportunities to new-class stakeholders. It aims at creating a new BI experience driven by end-users needs, supported by a new generation of BI infrastructure build up by new technologies, open source components and open standards, providing qualification, services, expertise. The BI initiative also aims at structuring open development activities around an open supply chain, contributing to the growth of alternative business and technology break-through drivers.

SOA InitiativeThe SOA Initiative aims at fostering the growth of a business ecosystem in the Service Oriented Architecture domain. The objective is to put together OW2 projects with other open source projects in an industrial class SOA-compliant framework with associated use-cases and demonstrators. In building SOA Initiative, we expect consumers and producers of technology to help identify the solution(s) to their integration issues, to work together to produce this/these solutions and to participate with OW2?s marketing and communication team in their promotion. In this respect OW2 is the perfect place for its business neutrality where participants can freely exchange ideas, technologies, information, etc. End users will participate at the same level as developers. And, to answer the classic Open Source question ?Who will support me??, the SOA Initiative will represent also a network of companies committed to support the technologies integrated in the solutions collectively promoted by the Initiative.

Embedded Software InitiativeWe are currently working on developing an Embedded Software Intiative. There has been many discussions about such an Initiative. We are currently working on an Initiative which will address the needs for Embedded Software Upgrading. This Initiative is in its early stage of incubation.
