Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

Cloud computing here, cloud computing there, cloud computing was certainly one of the main discussion topics in July at [OSCON>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/view/Events/OSCON2010>blank], Portland - where we announced our support for [OpenStack>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/view/PressReleases/OW2supportsOpenStack>blank] -  and, in August, the underpinning theme at [CONSEGI>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/view/Events/CONSEGI2010>blank], Brazilia, where we explained our analysis and strategy.

Our view is that the powerful commoditization trends which helped commercial open source software grow to what it is today are now fueling the growth of cloud computing.

The relationship between open source and cloud computing will be complex: they will be both rival and complementary. The opportunities for OW2 derive, on one hand, from the need for software innovation in cloud computing and, on the other, from open clouds requiring open source software. In other words, there will be no open clouds without open source software: as a community, we are committed to fostering *open source for open clouds* and this strategy is executed through the [OW2 Open Source Software initiative>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/view/Cloud/>blank]. More on the OW2 analysis and strategy in this essay [here>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/download/About/OW2Consortium/CedricThomasOSSandCommodizationJUL10-Draftv1.1.pdf>blank] and in the presentation [here>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/download/Events/CONSEGI2010/OW2- CONSEGI2010- Prez- FinalDraft.pdf>blank].

Whole sessions will be dedicated to cloud computing at several upcoming events where OW2 and its members will be highly visible:

- the [OW2 Open Source Corporate Networking Meeting>http://www.ow2.org/view/Events/OW2OpenSourceBusinessnetworkingmeetingChina>blank], in Beijing, September 21, organized with the help of BeiHang University and the China Local Chapter,

- the [Open World Forum>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/view/Events/OpenWorldForum2010>blank], in Paris, September 30 -  October 1,

- the [Open Source World Conference>http://www.ow2.org/xwiki/bin/view/Events/OpenSourceWorldConferenceSpain>blank], in Malaga, October 27- 28, where the OW2 village and conference track will showcase several OW2 members and their projects,

-  the [2010 OW2 Annual Conference>http://www.ow2.org/view/Events2010AnnualConference/>blank] with keynote speakers such as Ignacio Llorente of OpenNebula and Bret Priatt of OpenStack.

Meanwhile, the  [2010 Programming Contest>http://www.ow2.org/view/Events2010ProgrammingContest/>blank] is in its final evaluation stage. Good luck to the 12 teams who delivered their codes on time and we look forward to congratulating them at the award conference in Ningxia University, Sept. 24- 25.

And, don't forget the [OW2 Annual Conference>http://www.ow2.org/view/Events2010AnnualConference/>blank] call for papers, published [here>http://www.ow2.org/view/Events2010AnnualConference/CallForPresentations>blank]; the deadline is Sept. 10! Hurry!

Please see below for more information.

Thank you for your on- going support,

[Cedric Thomas>cedricthomas@ow2.org>blank]
