May 2014 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - May 2014 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

The pressure is on to improve OW2's sustainability, We may make some changes but we remain convinced that not everything needs to change. OW2 has a role to play because the open source ecosystem as a whole is structured by non-profit organizations. Consider open source projects. They are generally developed by teams with limited market power. When they are not supported by loosely-tied communities of individual programmers, they may be supported by development teams within large organizations (R&D teams, not business units!) or by start-ups that are but SMEs. Even the leader in the open source market cannot be compared with giant proprietary software vendors. If open source software has achieved the market status it now enjoys, it is to a large extent thanks to the non-profit organizations that have contributed to build its critical mass. The Linux, Apache, Eclipse and OpenStack foundations in North America and the OW2 consortium in Europe are the leading indepoendent organizations that give some direction to the open source ecosystem.

I am pleased to announce the date of our next annual conference: OW2con'14 is scheduled November 4-6. We have published the topics for the programming contest; participants have until May 31 to register. I'd like to remind you of the OW2 Webinars our new service to help promote OW2 projects.

At the time of publishing this newsletter there are only a few hours left to vote for the Individual Members representative -- online vote closes today, May 6 at 11:30pm CET.  We will announce the results the next day and the new board members will be listed here; they will elect their chairperson on May 23. Talking about elections, the European elections will take place this month and it is the right time to ask your candidates to sign the Free Software Pact.

As usual, thank you for your on-going support,

Cedric Thomas

PS: Project leaders: Do not forget to use the OW2 Forge to tell everybody about your project updates. News will appear on the OW2 forge, our home page and in this newsletter
