April 2013 Newsletter

[OW2 Newsletter - April 2013 - From the OW2 Management Office]

Dear OW2 Members, dear All,

OW2 was at CeBIT earlier in March to unveil CHOReOS and launch the OW2 Future Internet Software and services initiative (FISSi). At CeBIT, future technology and research projects are displayed next to pragmatic ready-to-go business solutions. An event like no other, CeBIT is the largest ICT exhibition and conference in the world. The event is so big that only the leadersin the industry have their own booths. Most other companies join forces to exhibit under the patronage of a reseller or a government agency, for instance.

The world of open source is somewhat similar with a very small number of large companies and a large number of small companies, development teams and projects that need to unite to have a chance to be heard. Take, for instance, industry alliances such as the Open Source Business Alliance in Germany and the Systematic GTLL in France, or communities such as OW2, Eclipse, Apache and OpenStack. Sometimes, industry alliances and communities seem to overlap when, for example, they help companies join forces to be present at CeBIT, but most of the time, however, they differ. Industry alliances essentially share business concerns and interests and lobby their governments. Communities have more than business in common; they share a sense of direction, a governance and a code base, and they are global. Communities and industry alliances fulfill different roles; they are complementary. The open source world needs both.

As for the latest news, we have announced the results of the 2013 OW2 election. The new board members are listed here; they will elect their chairperson on April 19. In the meantime the OW2 General Assembly will be held on April 10. The Management Office is still interviewing candidates for the SysAdmin job at OW2; if you are interested, details here. On the technology side, congratulations to DocDoku on its upgrade to mature project status by the Technology Council!

Thanking you for your on-going support,

Cedric Thomas

PS: Project leaders: Do not forget to use the OW2 Forge to tell everybody about your project updates. News will appear on the OW2 forge, our home page and in this newsletter
